Chapter 3: A Family Divided

Chapter 3: A Family Divided

The news spread through our family faster than either of us expected.

Some relatives begged us to forgive Sarah.

"She's your sister."

"She made one mistake."

"Don't ruin her life."

One mistake?

Locking a sick child alone in a freezing basement for hours wasn't a mistake.

It was a choice.

Matthew's father, David, finally admitted he had questioned Sarah earlier that afternoon.

He remembered hearing Noah crying downstairs.

Sarah had told him Noah was throwing a tantrum and needed time alone.

David believed her.

Now he could barely live with the guilt.

Matthew struggled even more.

He visited Noah at the hospital carrying a small toy race car.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I didn't know."

Noah smiled weakly.

"It wasn't your fault."

Watching those two boys hug each other reminded me who the real adults were.

Children forgive because they don't yet understand cruelty.

Adults know that forgiveness doesn't erase accountability.

A month later, Sarah was formally charged with child endangerment and unlawful imprisonment.

She stood in court with tears running down her face.

But every time I looked at Noah sitting beside us...

I remembered that cold basement.
