Chapter 1: The Basement

Chapter 1: The Basement
The basement light flickered as I rushed down the narrow wooden stairs two at a time.
"Noah!"
No answer.
Only another weak breath.
My heart pounded so hard I could barely hear anything else.
Then I saw him.
My eight-year-old boy was curled into a tight ball on the concrete floor, still wearing the blue T-shirt he'd proudly picked out that morning. His cheeks were pale, his lips had turned almost gray, and one arm was wrapped tightly around his stomach.
Beside him lay his backpack.
The emergency phone was gone.
Emily gasped behind me before dropping to her knees.
"Oh, sweetheart..."
She gently touched Noah's forehead and immediately pulled her hand back.
"He has a fever, Michael."
Noah slowly opened his eyes.
"Dad..."
His voice barely existed.
"I called..."
"You did, buddy."
I wrapped him carefully in my arms.
"I came."
His body shook violently from the cold.
"I couldn't get out."
He pointed weakly toward the outside of the basement door.
"She... locked it."
Emily looked at the heavy deadbolt.
It was still engaged.
Sarah had not simply sent him downstairs.
She had locked him inside.
I carried Noah upstairs without saying another word.
Sarah stepped into the hallway.
"I didn't think—"
"No."
I stared directly into her eyes.
"You didn't."
Outside, Emily was already dialing 911.
Within minutes, police officers and paramedics filled the quiet neighborhood with flashing lights.
As they loaded Noah into the ambulance, one paramedic quietly asked me a question that made my stomach drop.
"Sir... how long has your son been trapped in that basement?"
May you like
I looked back at Sarah.
She couldn't even meet my eyes.
