Chapter 3 - The Awakening

The hospital room smelled strongly of bleach and stale institutional coffee.

Lucy slowly fluttered her heavy eyelids open.

The harsh fluorescent lights above blinded her for a brief second.

She winced, turning her head slightly on the stiff pillow.

Then, she heard it.

The fast, rhythmic, swooshing sound of the fetal heart monitor filled the quiet room.

It was the most beautiful music she had ever heard in her life.

Her baby was alive.

Tears immediately pricked the corners of her eyes and rolled silently into her hair.

She took a deep, shuddering breath, testing her lungs.

They ached, but the suffocating feeling from the elevator was finally gone.

The heavy wooden door creaked open.

A kind-faced nurse walked in, checking the charts at the end of the bed.

"Oh, good, you’re awake," the nurse said with a warm, sympathetic smile.

"How are we feeling today, mama?"

"Thirsty," Lucy croaked, her throat feeling like sandpaper.

The nurse quickly poured a cup of ice water and handed it to her with a straw.

Lucy took a long, desperate sip, letting the cool liquid soothe her raw throat.

"Is my baby really okay?" Lucy asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"The baby is a fighter, just like you," the nurse reassured her.

"Heart rate is strong and steady."

"You suffered from minor smoke inhalation and severe dehydration, but you're stable."

Lucy let out a long sigh of relief, sinking deeper into the hospital bed.

"Your husband is in the waiting room," the nurse added cautiously.

"He’s been out there all night demanding to see you."

Lucy’s heart instantly hardened into ice.

The memory of the dark elevator flashed behind her eyes.

She remembered the agonizing fear as the cables groaned above them.

She remembered Alex’s voice echoing through the gap in the doors.

He hadn't asked if anyone else was inside.

He had only asked for Valerie.

"I don't want to see him," Lucy said firmly, her voice steady and clear.

The nurse paused, looking surprised but entirely professional.

"Are you sure, honey?"

"I am absolutely sure," Lucy replied without hesitation.

"Please tell security that he is not allowed in this room under any circumstances."

"And I need to speak to my lawyer as soon as possible."

The nurse nodded slowly, recognizing the fierce determination in the woman's eyes.

"I'll make sure he doesn't get past the front desk," the nurse promised.

As the nurse walked out, Lucy placed both hands on her stomach.

She didn't need Alex's fake apologies.

She didn't need his guilt-ridden excuses.

She only needed a quiet place to heal and a good divorce attorney.

The war was just beginning.
