Chapter 14 - The New Foundation

The golden afternoon sun poured perfectly through the large bay windows of Lucy’s apartment.

Six months had passed since the terrifying incident in the elevator.

Lucy was now heavily pregnant, her belly beautifully round and aching with the weight of her growing child.

She stood in the center of the newly decorated nursery, folding tiny, incredibly soft yellow onesies.

The room was painted a soothing sage green, completely free of the cold, sterile modernism Alex always preferred.

It felt warm, incredibly safe, and full of genuine love.

A familiar key turned in the front door lock, followed by the sound of heavy work boots hitting the floor mat.

"I come bearing a dangerous amount of double chocolate ice cream!" a cheerful voice announced.

Lucy couldn't help the massive, radiant smile that completely took over her face.

Mark walked into the nursery, looking perfectly handsome in his off-duty flannel shirt.

Over the last six months, Mark hadn't just been a friend.

He had become her absolute rock.

He had attended every single ultrasound appointment, holding her hand when she was nervous.

He had spent his weekends assembling the wooden crib and painting the nursery walls.

He never pushed her, never demanded anything in return, and always prioritized her safety.

"You are an absolute lifesaver," Lucy laughed, taking the cold pint of ice cream from his strong hands.

"I was about to commit a crime for some chocolate."

Mark chuckled, leaning casually against the doorframe as he watched her.

His dark eyes were incredibly soft, filled with an unspoken adoration that always made her heart skip a beat.

"How is the little kicker doing today?" he asked, walking over to stand directly in front of her.

"Restless," Lucy smiled, gently taking his rough hand and pressing it against her stomach.

Right on cue, the baby delivered a strong, sharp kick against Mark’s palm.

Mark’s face lit up with absolute wonder, a boyish grin spreading across his face.

"That is the strongest right hook I've ever felt," he joked quietly.

They stood there for a long moment, completely lost in the peaceful silence of the beautiful room.

Lucy looked up into his eyes, realizing with sudden, intense clarity how much she had changed.

She wasn't the broken, terrified woman crying in the back of an ambulance anymore.

"Mark?" she whispered softly, breaking the comfortable silence.

"Yeah, Lucy?"

"Why do you do all of this for me?" she asked honestly.

Mark didn't look away, his gaze remaining incredibly steady and overwhelmingly sincere.

"Because you deserve to know what it feels like to be truly protected," he answered simply.

"And because I have been completely in love with you since the day you smiled at me in the hospital."

Lucy’s breath hitched perfectly in her throat.

She didn't feel panic, and she didn't feel fear.

She only felt an overwhelming, beautiful sense of coming home.

She leaned forward, resting her forehead gently against his chest.

Mark wrapped his strong arms securely around her shoulders, holding her exactly like she was the most precious thing in the world.

For the first time in her life, Lucy knew she was perfectly safe.
