Chapter 14 - The Hearing

The emergency trust hearing began at 9:00 a.m.
The merger deadline was seven hours away.
Bianca arrived at the High Court through the front entrance.
Cameras surrounded her.
She wore a cream suit and the expression of a concerned relative forced into an unfortunate dispute.
"Mrs. Rossi is family," she told reporters.
"We want only to ensure that major financial decisions are not being made under emotional pressure."
Julian watched the clip from a private conference room inside the courthouse.
"She is good."
Elena adjusted the sleeve of a simple black dress Mercer's assistant had brought her.
"She has practiced being reasonable her entire life."
Julian looked at Elena.
"You do not have to prove anything about yourself in there."
"Yes, I do."
"No."
She met his eyes.
"Julian, the entire petition says I cannot be trusted with my own decisions."
"I am going to answer that."
He nodded.
"Then answer it."
The courtroom was smaller than the public drama suggested.
Bianca sat behind a team of elite trust lawyers.
Adrian was absent because he remained in police custody.
Camila waited in a separate witness room.
Martin Keller had submitted a sworn statement but had not appeared.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Bianca's counsel spoke first.
He described Elena's eight-month disappearance.
Her use of temporary addresses.
Her decision to work under a shortened version of her name.
Her therapy visits.
Her fear of surveillance.
Her sudden assertion of enormous trust powers less than twenty-four hours after reuniting with Julian.
Every fact was technically true.
The story they created from those facts was false.
Julian finally understood the sophistication of Bianca's method.
She did not invent everything.
She arranged truth into a lie.
Elena's counsel responded.
Then Elena testified.
Bianca's lawyer approached gently.
"Mrs. Rossi, during the last eight months, did you believe people connected to Rossi Global were following you?"
"Yes."
"Did you change residences seven times?"
"Yes."
"Did you use prepaid telephones?"
"Yes."
"Did you instruct medical providers not to contact your husband?"
"Yes."
"Did you believe your husband might be in danger if you contacted him?"
"Yes."
The lawyer paused.
"Mrs. Rossi, do you understand how those beliefs might appear paranoid?"
Elena looked at Bianca.
Then back at the lawyer.
"They would appear paranoid if no one had actually been following me."
A quiet murmur moved through the room.
The lawyer smiled politely.
"And can you prove someone was following you?"
Elena's counsel stood.
"We can."
Mercer's team introduced photographs recovered from Keller's hotel office under a preservation order issued that morning.
They showed Elena entering clinics, grocery stores, and temporary apartments.
Dates spanned four months.
The photographs had been stored in a folder labeled E.R. MOVEMENT.
The judge looked toward Bianca.
Her expression did not change.
Then Dr. Maya Chen appeared by secure video from Vancouver.
She testified that Elena had never presented as delusional.
She had presented as frightened, sleep-deprived, and uncertain whether evidence shown to her was genuine.
Dr. Chen also testified that a private investigator later pressured her to disclose confidential records.
When she refused, anonymous complaints and legal threats followed.
Bianca's lawyer objected to relevance.
The judge overruled him.
Then Camila testified.
Before she entered the courtroom, Camila had asked Elena for one minute alone.
Elena almost refused.
Then she agreed.
They stood in a narrow witness corridor with beige walls and a vending machine humming at the far end.
Camila looked nothing like the woman in the emerald gown from the Grand Alcazar.
She wore a plain navy suit, minimal makeup, and no visible jewelry.
"I do not expect you to make me feel better," Camila said.
"Good."
"I need to tell you something before their lawyer does."
Elena waited.
"The first staged video paid me forty thousand euros."
"You told us Bianca paid you."
"I did not tell you how much."
"No."
"There were later payments too."
"For dating Julian?"
"For appearing in public with him."
"For sending Bianca details about his schedule."
Elena's eyes hardened.
"What details?"
"Where he ate."
"When he traveled."
"When he seemed angry."
"When he mentioned you."
Elena felt something cold move through her.
"You reported when he mentioned me?"
Camila nodded.
"Bianca wanted to know whether he was still looking for you emotionally, even after the formal search slowed."
"What did you tell her?"
"The truth."
"That he never stopped."
Elena looked away.
The answer hurt in an unexpected direction.
For months, she had imagined Julian moving on because that story made distance easier to maintain.
Now she knew Camila had watched him fail to move on and reported that grief back to the person keeping them apart.
Camila continued.
"I should have understood something was wrong."
"Yes."
"I did not want to."
"That is different."
"I know."
Elena looked at her.
"Why tell me now?"
"Because Bianca's lawyer has my bank records."
"They will make it sound like every sentence I say is purchased by whoever frightens me most."
"Were you purchased?"
Camila swallowed.
"For a while."
"And now?"
"Now I am trying to be expensive in a different way."
Elena almost smiled despite herself.
Camila took a breath.
"I am sorry."
Elena did not answer the apology.
Instead she said, "When you get in there, do not try to make yourself sympathetic."
Camila nodded.
"Tell the numbers."
"Tell the lies."
"Tell what you gained."
"And tell what you ignored."
Camila looked at her with something close to gratitude.
"That sounds like advice."
"It is testimony strategy."
"Do not confuse it with friendship."
"I won't."
A court officer opened the door.
"Ms. Reyes, they are ready for you."
Camila straightened.
Before leaving, she looked back.
"For what it is worth, he never said one cruel thing about you."
Elena's throat tightened.
Camila walked into the courtroom.
She admitted accepting money from Bianca.
She admitted appearing in staged footage before meeting Julian personally.
She admitted being encouraged to begin a public relationship with him months later.
Bianca's lawyer attacked her credibility.
"You lied to Mr. Rossi for four months."
"Yes."
"You accepted substantial payments."
"Yes."
"You stole a private recording device from my client."
"Yes."
"So why should this court believe you now?"
Camila looked at Elena.
"Because the first useful thing I have done in this entire mess is admit what I did."
The courtroom became still.
Then came the recording.
Bianca's voice played through courtroom speakers.
Elena is the problem.
There is no family once the heir is born.
Make sure Elena remains legally absent until the merger closes.
Bianca finally lost color.
Her lawyers asked for a recess.
The judge refused.
Elena's counsel introduced the notarized Bellagio trust documents.
Schedule C was read into the record.
The language was clear.
Bianca's lawyer asked to examine the original chain of custody from Bellagio.
Elena's counsel had anticipated the attack.
The Italian notary appeared by video.
The financial-police officer testified to the key transfer, sealed cabinet, wax seal, document photography, and secure transmission.
Sofia Bellini then appeared from the villa.
She looked directly into the camera with the expression of a woman who had waited decades for lawyers to ask her the right questions.
"Mrs. Bellini," Bianca's counsel began, "you were personally loyal to Vittorio Rossi?"
"Yes."
"Deeply loyal?"
"Yes."
"Would you describe yourself as protective of his wishes?"
"Only the intelligent ones."
A few people in the courtroom smiled.
The lawyer did not.
"Is it possible the documents were added to the cabinet after Mr. Rossi's death?"
"No."
"How can you be certain?"
"Because I sealed the box with him."
The lawyer paused.
"You personally applied the wax seal?"
"Yes."
"And you never opened it afterward?"
"No."
"Not even when Bianca Rossi became general counsel?"
Sofia's expression sharpened.
"Especially not then."
Bianca looked up.
The lawyer hesitated.
"Why?"
"Because Vittorio told me no Rossi lawyer was to touch that box unless Elena used the key."
The courtroom went silent.
Julian looked at Elena.
She stared at the screen.
Bianca had spent years near the document and still could not legally access it.
Vittorio had not trusted a title.
He had trusted a condition.
The spouse would need the key.
The betrayal would need to occur.
The person under pressure would decide when the protection became necessary.
Elena realized the clause had not been designed to make her powerful.
It had been designed to make power impossible to activate without the person most likely to suffer from its abuse.
That difference mattered.
Fraud, coercion, or concealment directed against Julian's spouse or heir triggered Elena's protector authority.
Bianca's counsel argued the clause had not been activated because no final finding of fraud existed.
Elena's lawyer pointed to another sentence.
TEMPORARY PROTECTOR AUTHORITY SHALL OPERATE UPON REASONABLE EVIDENCE PENDING FINAL DETERMINATION.
Vittorio Rossi had anticipated lawyers arguing with his lawyers.
The judge almost smiled.
At 12:44 p.m., the court upheld Elena's temporary protector notice.
The merger remained frozen.
Bianca's petition to restrain Elena was denied.
Julian looked at Elena.
She did not celebrate.
She simply closed her eyes and breathed.
Then Bianca stood.
Her lawyer tried to stop her.
She ignored him.
"Elena."
The judge looked up.
"Ms. Rossi, sit down."
Bianca continued.
"You think you won because Vittorio chose you."
Elena stared at her.
"I did not ask him to choose me."
"No."
Bianca laughed softly.
"That is why he did."
The judge warned her again.
Bianca sat.
Outside the courtroom, reporters exploded into motion.
Mercer guided Julian and Elena through a private exit.
Detective Quinn met them in the corridor.
"We found Keller."
Julian stopped.
"Where?"
"He turned himself in forty minutes ago."
Elena stared.
"Why?"
"He wants protection."
"For what?"
Quinn looked toward the closed courtroom doors.
"For evidence involving Bianca's father."
Julian's expression changed.
"My uncle?"
"Apparently this began before Adrian."
Before Bianca became general counsel.
Before Elena joined the family.
Before Julian's father died.
Quinn held up a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was an old cassette tape.
Keller had kept it for nineteen years.
On the handwritten label were two names.
MATTEO ROSSI.
LORENZO ROSSI.
Julian's father.
And Bianca's father.
May you like
Beneath the names was a date.
Three weeks before Lorenzo Rossi died in a boating accident on Lake Como.
