Chapter 13 - Eight Months of Silence

Peter Lang was found alive in Essex at 6:30 that morning.

The storage unit was empty except for a chair, bottled water, and a portable heater.

The men who had been guarding him were gone.

Peter had a bruised cheek and injured wrist but was otherwise stable.

His first question was about his son.

Mercer had already moved Evan Lang from Cambridge to a secure hotel with police coordination.

Father and son reunited before noon.

Julian did not go.

He stayed with Elena.

For once, he understood that being present mattered more than being useful.

The Bellagio documents arrived electronically through a notarized evidence channel.

The physical originals remained with Italian authorities pending transfer.

Mercer's team read Schedule C line by line.

Elena's protector authority was real.

It could immediately suspend voting rights tied to Legacy Trust II and any asset held through entities linked to it.

It could also demand independent review of any transaction involving the heir trust.

Northstar Meridian's merger financing depended on those assets.

One signed protector notice from Elena could freeze the closing.

Bianca knew it too.

At 1:15 p.m., her lawyers filed an emergency petition challenging Elena's capacity to exercise trust authority.

They attached the altered therapy notes.

They attached photographs of Elena moving between seven addresses.

They attached evidence that she had worked under a shortened name at the Grand Alcazar.

They attached a statement from Martin Keller claiming Elena had exhibited "persistent fear of unnamed pursuers."

Julian read the petition in Mercer's office.

"They are using the fact that she was hiding from them as proof that she is irrational."

Mercer nodded.

"Classic circular construction."

Elena stood near the window.

She had become very quiet.

Julian closed the file.

"Talk to me."

"I am tired."

"You have been tired for eight months."

She looked at him.

"That is exactly the problem."

He waited.

Elena touched the glass.

"I have spent eight months making every decision based on fear."

"Which train has fewer cameras."

"Which clinic will accept cash."

"Which hotel manager can be bribed into not asking for references."

"Which person might be following me."

Her voice stayed steady.

"I learned to sleep in clothes I could run in."

"I stopped buying anything I could not carry in one bag."

"I stopped making friends because friends ask questions."

Julian did not interrupt.

"I would wake up at three in the morning convinced I had heard your car outside."

"Sometimes I wanted it to be you."

"Sometimes I was terrified it was."

Julian's face tightened.

"Why terrified of me?"

"Because they showed me documents with your signature."

"They told me you had discovered the transfers and blamed me."

"They said you had agreed to let Bianca handle me privately to avoid scandal."

Julian looked sick.

"Elena, I would never--"

"I know."

She turned.

"I know now."

"But do you understand what they did?"

"They did not need me to believe you hated me forever."

"They only needed me to doubt you long enough to disappear."

Julian lowered his eyes.

"And I made it easy."

She frowned.

"How?"

"I was never home."

"That merger had me traveling every week."

"When you asked about company matters, I told you not to worry."

"When you asked why Adrian had foundation access, I told you he was handling it."

"When you said Bianca made you uncomfortable at that dinner in Milan, I defended her."

Elena remembered.

Bianca had spent the evening making small jokes about Elena not being born into the Rossi world.

Julian had called it family humor.

"I trained you not to expect me to listen," he said.

Elena's expression softened despite herself.

"That is not the same as causing this."

"No."

"But it is the part that belongs to me."

He stepped closer.

"I cannot undo eight months."

"I cannot make you trust me because I demand it."

"I cannot even promise that I will never fail you again."

She looked surprised.

Julian continued.

"I can promise that I will never again confuse protecting you with deciding for you."

Elena's eyes filled.

"Careful."

"What?"

"You almost sound emotionally competent."

He smiled.

"I have consultants."

She laughed softly.

Then she began to cry.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Eight months simply reached the surface at once.

Julian did not move until she moved first.

Elena crossed the space between them and pressed her forehead against his chest.

He wrapped his arms around her carefully.

For several minutes, nothing else mattered.

When Elena finally stepped back, Julian did not ask whether the embrace meant forgiveness.

A year earlier, he might have.

He would have wanted a label, a decision, a clean answer he could place around uncertainty.

Now he understood that some moments became smaller when forced to explain themselves too quickly.

Elena wiped her face and sat down.

Julian poured water into a glass.

She drank half of it.

Then she looked at him over the rim.

"This does not mean we are fixed."

"I know."

"Do you?"

"Yes."

"You have a history of hearing the version you prefer."

"That is becoming painfully well documented."

She lowered the glass.

"I still get angry at you."

"I would be concerned if you did not."

"I mean really angry."

"I know."

"Sometimes I remember that I was sleeping in a room above a laundromat while you were photographed at a gala with Camila."

Julian's face tightened.

"I did not know."

"I know that too."

"That is what makes it complicated."

She stared at the water.

"I can understand why you did something and still hate that it happened."

Julian sat across from her.

"I can understand why you stayed away and still feel abandoned."

Elena looked up.

The honesty surprised her.

He continued.

"I am not saying that to accuse you."

"I am saying it because if we pretend only one of us is allowed to hurt, we will build another lie."

Elena's eyes softened.

"That is better than what you said in counseling that one time."

"We have not started counseling yet."

"I am predicting."

Julian smiled.

Then his expression grew serious.

"When this ends, if you do not want to come home with me, I will understand."

Elena became still.

The sentence cost him visibly.

"You would?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"I would hate it."

"But I would understand that wanting you home is not the same as you being ready."

Elena looked toward the window.

For months she had imagined returning to Julian as a single dramatic act.

A door opening.

A confession.

A decision.

Now she saw that going home might be a sequence of small permissions.

Dinner without fear.

A night of sleep.

A phone left on the table without checking whether it was tracked.

An argument that ended without anyone disappearing.

"I do not know what I want yet," she said.

Julian nodded.

"That is allowed."

Elena looked back at him.

"That sentence might be the most expensive thing you have ever given me."

"More than the jewelry you sold?"

"Much more."

He smiled sadly.

"Then keep it."

No merger.

No trust.

No scandal.

No Bianca.

Only the two people who had been separated by a lie finally standing in the same truth.

The baby moved between them.

Elena laughed through tears.

Julian looked down.

"Already interrupting."

"Definitely yours."

He placed his hand over hers.

"Did you choose names?"

"A few."

"Without me?"

"You were unavailable."

"Fair."

She hesitated.

"If it is a girl, I thought about Lucia."

"My mother's name."

"Yes."

Julian swallowed.

"And if it is a boy?"

Elena looked at him.

"Leo."

He smiled.

"Why Leo?"

"Because it means brave."

Before he could answer, Mercer entered without knocking.

He stopped when he saw them holding each other.

"I can come back."

"No," Elena said.

"What happened?"

Mercer held a printed email.

"We found Dr. Maya Chen."

Julian stepped away from Elena.

"Where?"

"Vancouver."

"Adrian was right?"

"Partly."

Mercer handed Elena the page.

"Dr. Chen says Bianca's private investigator approached her seven months ago."

"They offered her money to release your treatment notes."

"She refused."

"What happened next?"

"Someone filed an anonymous professional complaint accusing her of improper prescribing."

"She was cleared."

"But her landlord terminated her clinic lease after receiving legal threats."

Elena stared at the paper.

"So she left."

"Yes."

"Will she testify?"

Mercer nodded.

"By video at the emergency hearing tomorrow."

Julian looked at the clock.

The merger deadline was seventeen hours away.

"Elena needs to exercise the protector authority now."

Mercer shook his head.

"Bianca's petition requests an immediate temporary restraint preventing Elena from acting until capacity is reviewed."

"Has the court granted it?"

"Not yet."

"Then she signs now."

Elena looked at Mercer.

"Would it hold?"

"Probably."

"Probably?"

"Bianca will argue you acted after notice of the challenge."

Julian looked at Elena.

"It is your decision."

She noticed the words.

Your decision.

Not ours.

Not mine.

Elena took the protector notice from Mercer.

She read every page.

Then she signed.

At 4:02 p.m., formal notices went to Rossi Global, Northstar Meridian, the Swiss trustee, the merger banks, and the board.

At 4:07 p.m., Northstar's lead bank suspended funding pending review.

At 4:11 p.m., Rossi Global shares began falling.

At 4:19 p.m., Bianca called Julian.

He put her on speaker.

"You have no idea what she just did," Bianca said.

Julian looked at Elena.

"Yes, I do."

"She could destroy the company."

"Elena did not steal the money."

"She froze a transaction built on stolen money."

Bianca's voice sharpened.

"You think this is about money?"

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"What is it about?"

A long silence followed.

Then Bianca said something he had never expected.

"Ask your father."

Julian's face changed.

"My father is dead."

"I know."

Bianca's voice turned cold.

May you like

"That is why you have spent your whole life believing his version."

She hung up.
