Chapter 6: The Ghost's Ledger

Three hours later, the armored sedan pulled up to a secluded, off-the-grid cabin deep in the mountains. It was owned by a dummy corporation Marcus had set up years ago. No Wi-Fi, no cell service, no digital footprint.

While Hayes did a perimeter sweep and got a fire going in the hearth, Marcus set Lily up on the plush sofa with a blanket and a portable DVD player.

Then, he sat at the rustic wooden dining table and booted up his heavily encrypted, air-gapped laptop.

He took a deep breath, his fingers trembling slightly as he inserted the black USB drive into the port. A prompt immediately appeared on the screen: ENTER DECRYPTION KEY.

Marcus opened Elena’s journal. He flipped through the pages, scanning her frantic, desperate handwriting.

August 14th.
They suspect me. I heard Viktor talking on the encrypted line. I’ve downloaded the ledger. It’s the only way to keep Marcus safe. If they try to kill him, this ledger will destroy their entire financial network. The password is the place we first met.

Marcus closed his eyes. The memories washed over him—a rainy afternoon in Seattle, a small, independent bookstore that smelled of old paper and vanilla coffee.

Slowly, he typed: P a g e & I n k

The screen went black for a second. Then, lines of code began cascading down the monitor like rain. A massive, complex database opened.

Marcus was a genius coder, but it took him a full ten minutes to comprehend the sheer scale of what he was looking at.

It wasn't just a ledger. It was the Petrov Syndicate's entire global architecture. It contained offshore bank account routing numbers, the names of corrupt politicians they had bribed, GPS coordinates of illicit shipping routes, and the identities of every undercover operative they had planted in major tech companies around the world.

Elena hadn't just stolen a file. She had stolen the keys to their kingdom. With this drive, Marcus could dismantle a multi-billion dollar criminal empire with a single keystroke.

But as he scrolled down, a specific folder caught his eye. It was labeled "Assets - Domestic."

Marcus clicked it. A list of names and photos populated the screen. He scrolled, his stomach twisting into tight knots, until he stopped on a familiar face.

Cassandra Montgomery.

Next to her photo were detailed notes. She had been on the Syndicate's payroll for six years. Her assignment: Infiltrate Vale Tech. Locate the missing ledger stolen by Subject E. Eliminate Subject E.

Marcus felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at the screen, a cold, terrifying numbness spreading through his veins.

Elena hadn't died of a natural aneurysm.

Cassandra killed her.

And then, that monster had wormed her way into Marcus's bed, kissed his face, and read bedtime stories to his daughter, all while searching for the drive.

A heavy, jagged sob tore from Marcus's throat. He buried his face in his hands, the grief and rage finally breaking the dam. He had let his wife’s murderer into his home. He had almost married her.

Slowly, Marcus lifted his head. His eyes were no longer those of a grieving widower. They were the eyes of a man who had nothing left to lose. He looked at his daughter, safely watching a cartoon by the fire, and made a silent vow.

He wasn't just going to survive. He was going to wipe the Petrov Syndicate off the face of the earth. And he was going to start with Cassandra.
