Chapter 19: The Masterstroke

The Vale Tech boardroom was utterly silent, save for the hum of the city below. The twelve members of the board sat around the massive glass table.
At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling. He was a distinguished man in his late sixties, with silver hair and a bespoke tailored suit. He looked like the picture of grandfatherly success.
"Thank you all for coming," Richard said smoothly, projecting an aura of deep concern. "I called this emergency meeting because I have uncovered something disturbing. Over the last year, Marcus Vale’s personal vendettas have brought armed mercenaries to his doorstep. He has brought scandal to this company. And now, I have evidence that he is mismanaging our funds."
The board members murmured uneasily.
The heavy double doors swung open. Marcus strode into the room, impeccably dressed, his face an unreadable mask of absolute calm. Hayes flanked him, stepping back to guard the door.
"Marcus," Richard said, feigning disappointment. "We were just discussing your... leave of absence."
"Were we?" Marcus asked, walking slowly to the opposite end of the table. "Or were you just buying time until 9:00 AM?"
Richard’s eye twitched slightly, a microscopic break in his perfect facade. He glanced at his gold Rolex. It was 8:58 AM.
"I don't know what you're talking about," Richard said firmly. "I am initiating a board vote for your immediate removal as CEO."
"You aren't voting on anything, Richard," Marcus said, tapping a button on a remote in his hand. The glass table instantly transformed into a massive digital monitor, displaying the ominous red code of the Trojan horse.
The board members gasped.
"This is a localized financial wipe," Marcus announced to the room, never taking his eyes off Richard. "Planted by the man sitting at the head of this table. Richard Sterling is the Architect of the Petrov Syndicate."
"Lies!" Richard barked, standing up, his face flushing red. "This is a pathetic fabrication! You are insane, Marcus!"
"Am I?" Marcus checked his watch. "It’s 8:59, Richard. You set the code to execute automatically. Let’s see what happens."
Richard gripped the edge of the table. He knew he was caught, but a sickening, arrogant smirk crept onto his face. "You always were too smart for your own good, Marcus. But you're too late. The code is locked."
The digital clock on the wall clicked to 9:00 AM.
The red code on the table flashed violently, turning bright, neon green.
Richard watched the screen, waiting for Vale Tech’s accounts to zero out. Instead, a new window popped up. It displayed Richard’s massive, hidden offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, Switzerland, and Dubai.
Slowly, the billions of dollars in Richard’s private accounts began to rapidly drain.
$4,200,000,000... $2,100,000,000... $500,000,000... $0.00.
Richard’s face drained of all color. He staggered backward, clutching his chest. "No. No! What did you do?!"
"I mirrored your Trojan," Marcus said, his voice echoing with finality. "I didn't just drain your accounts, Richard. I redirected every single cent of your blood money to a dozen international charities, orphanages, and the FBI's victim restitution fund. You aren't just exposed. You are completely, utterly broke."
Sirens wailed in the streets below. Federal agents were already pulling up to the building.

Richard fell to his knees, his legacy destroyed in exactly sixty seconds. "You ruined me," he whispered.
"You did this to yourself," Marcus said, looking down at his former mentor with nothing but pity. "Hayes. Show him out."
