Chapter 1: The Sound of Sirens

The silence in the grand foyer was deafening. Just moments ago, the mansion had been a picture of wealthy domesticity. Now, the air was thick with the scent of Cassandra’s expensive perfume and the sharp, undeniable metallic tang of pure fear.
Marcus stood with Lily anchored to his chest. The little girl had her face buried in the crook of his neck, her tiny hands gripping his custom-tailored suit jacket like it was a life preserver. She was trembling. Every shudder that racked her small body fueled the cold, terrifying rage pooling in Marcus’s stomach.
"Marcus, please," Cassandra whispered. The flawless, porcelain mask she wore for the world was cracking. Her perfectly manicured hands shook as she reached out toward him. "It’s… it’s out of context. You know how children lie. You know how difficult she’s been since her mother died. I was just trying to discipline her!"
"Discipline?" Marcus’s voice was dangerously quiet. It wasn’t a yell. It was the sound of a judge handing down a life sentence. "You forced my five-year-old daughter to eat from a dog bowl, Cassandra. You told her she was worthless."
"I didn't mean it!" she shrieked, the elegant facade shattering entirely. Her eyes darted around the luxurious entryway, realizing the doors were closing in on her. "You can't do this! The charity gala is tomorrow! The merger—"
"The merger is safe," Marcus interrupted, his eyes dead and unfeeling as he looked at the woman he almost married. "Your reputation, however, is not. I didn't just send the videos to the board. I sent them to the media. The local news stations. The lifestyle magazines that put you on their covers."
Cassandra stumbled back, her designer heels catching on the Persian rug. "You... you destroyed me."
"No," Marcus said, pulling Lily closer. "You destroyed yourself."
Red and blue lights suddenly began to flash through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the mansion, casting chaotic shadows across the imported marble floors. The police had arrived. Marcus had bypassed 911 and called the Chief of Police directly—a man whose political campaign Marcus had single-handedly funded.
When the heavy oak doors swung open, four officers stepped inside. They didn't ask questions. They had already seen the footage Marcus emailed them.
"Cassandra Montgomery?" the lead officer asked, stepping forward with a pair of silver handcuffs. "You're under arrest for child abuse and endangerment."
"Get your hands off me!" Cassandra screamed, thrashing as the officers grabbed her arms. The graceful, charming woman who had charmed the city's elite was gone, replaced by a snarling, desperate animal. "Do you know who I am?! Do you know who my fiancé is?!"
"He's the one who called us, ma'am," the officer replied dryly, forcing her wrists behind her back. The sharp click of the cuffs echoed off the vaulted ceilings.
As they dragged her out into the cold night air, flashing lights illuminating her tear-streaked, ruined makeup, Cassandra twisted her head back to look at Marcus. Her eyes were no longer pleading. They were venomous.
"This isn't over, Marcus!" she screamed, her voice carrying over the wail of the police cruisers. "You think you know everything?! You don't know anything about me! You don't know what's coming!"
Marcus didn't flinch. He simply turned away, pressing a gentle kiss to his daughter’s hair. "It's over, sweetheart," he murmured, carrying her upstairs away from the flashing lights. "She's never coming back."

But as he tucked Lily into her bed, a cold knot formed in Marcus's chest. Cassandra’s final words echoed in his mind. You don't know anything about me.
He thought he was ending a nightmare. He didn't realize he had just opened the door to a much darker one.
