Chapter 1 – The Last Dish

The entire house fell silent.

Without saying a word, Daniel walked past his wife and gently took the sponge from her trembling hands. He turned off the faucet, dried her hands with a clean towel, then wrapped his arm around her swollen waist.

"Go upstairs," he said softly. "You've done enough."

Emily looked at him with frightened eyes.

"They'll be upset."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. I'm the one who's upset."

He slowly walked into the living room, where his mother, Patricia, laughed at something on television while his younger brother, Eric, and Aunt Linda barely looked up from their phones.

Daniel picked up the remote.

Click.

The television went black.

"What are you doing?" Patricia frowned.

Daniel didn't answer immediately. Instead, he pointed toward the kitchen.

"Who left those dishes?"

Nobody spoke.

"I asked a simple question."

Eric shrugged.

"We all ate."

"And?"

"I figured Emily would clean them."

Daniel stared at him.

"My wife is eight months pregnant."

"So?" Patricia replied coldly. "A woman should take care of her household."

Daniel smiled—but it wasn't a happy smile.

"My wife isn't your maid."

Patricia rolled her eyes.

"Don't start disrespecting your mother because your wife shed a few tears."

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"She wasn't crying because of the dishes."

He paused.

"She was crying because every single one of you watched her suffer... and chose to do nothing."

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Daniel walked back into the kitchen, picked up every dirty plate, and carried them into the living room.

One by one, he placed them on the expensive coffee table.

"If everyone wants Emily to clean after them," he said calmly, "then everyone can watch the mess together."

Nobody moved.

For the first time in years, Patricia had no words.
