Chapter 9 - The Groom Who Disappeared.

The hotel moved quietly when Victor Laurent gave an order.

That was one of the things Vivienne had always respected about her father's staff.

There was no shouting.

No dramatic running through hallways.

Doors were monitored.

Camera feeds were checked.

Managers communicated in low voices.

Within four minutes, Malcolm had reconstructed Bryce's path.

He had left the ballroom through the west service corridor.

He used a catering stairwell to descend two floors.

Then he entered a conference wing that was closed for the evening.

The cameras lost him near a staff-only door.

Naomi stood over a printed floor map.

"That door leads toward the production office."

Vivienne frowned.

"The room the wedding livestream crew used?"

"Yes."

Dominic paced near the window.

"Maybe he went to shut down the livestream."

Elise looked at him.

"Why abandon his phone?"

Dominic stopped pacing.

He had no answer.

Amanda sat with both hands wrapped around a glass of water.

"Bryce knew about the ring plan."

Vivienne turned.

"How much did he know?"

"Chloe told him it was a joke."

"He told her she was being childish."

Amanda hesitated.

"But he didn't stop her."

Vivienne gave Dominic a tired look.

"Apparently that's contagious in this family."

Dominic absorbed the sentence without defending himself.

Malcolm called again.

"We found Mr. Calloway."

Bryce's surname sounded strange after a night of people treating him as another extension of the Mercers.

He had married Chloe less than four hours earlier.

"Where?" Victor asked.

"Production office."

"What was he doing?"

Another pause.

"He says he was trying to retrieve a wedding video file."

Elise asked the obvious question.

"Was he authorized to access that room?"

"The livestream vendor gave him a temporary badge earlier today."

"Did he attempt to access the security archive?"

"He denies it."

Victor's expression did not change.

"Bring him upstairs if he's willing."

Ten minutes later, Bryce entered the suite accompanied by Malcolm.

He looked furious rather than frightened.

His white dress shirt sleeves were rolled to his elbows.

"This is unbelievable."

Chloe had apparently found him before security did because a smear of her lipstick marked his collar.

Vivienne wondered whether that meant comfort or argument.

Bryce looked at Victor.

"I didn't touch your security system."

Victor gestured toward a chair.

"Sit."

Bryce remained standing.

"I'm not one of your employees."

Victor nodded.

"Then stand."

The answer robbed Bryce of the confrontation he wanted.

Elise took over.

"Why did you leave your phone in the ballroom?"

"Because Chloe grabbed it and put it on the table when we were arguing."

"Why did you go to the production office?"

"To get the local copy of our livestream."

"Why?"

Bryce glanced at Vivienne.

"Because the stream captured the whole accusation."

Vivienne stared at him.

"And you wanted the file?"

"I wanted it offline."

Elise's expression sharpened.

"Why?"

"Because my wife had just humiliated herself in front of two hundred people."

Amanda scoffed.

"Your wife humiliated Vivienne."

Bryce looked at her.

"Both things can be true."

Vivienne almost respected the honesty.

Almost.

Bryce continued.

"I knew guests were already recording on their phones."

"I was trying to stop the official wedding stream from being clipped and shared everywhere."

Naomi asked.

"Did you log into any hotel system?"

"No."

"The production laptop was connected to the venue network."

"That doesn't mean I tried to access security files."

Malcolm's phone buzzed.

He read the message.

Then he looked at Bryce.

"The failed login came from the production laptop."

Bryce's expression changed.

Dominic stepped forward.

"You said you didn't touch it."

"I didn't."

"Then who did?"

Bryce looked toward the door.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely unsettled.

"Chloe was in the room before me."

While security searched for Bryce, Chloe called the executive suite three times.

Nobody answered.

On the fourth attempt, she left a voice message for Dominic.

"Tell them Bryce has nothing to do with this."

Her tone was angry rather than frightened.

"And tell Vivienne to stop making everything bigger than it is."

Dominic listened once and deleted the message.

Vivienne noticed.

"Why delete it?"

He looked at her.

"Because for once I don't want her voice telling me what reality is."

Vivienne said nothing.

The answer would have sounded theatrical from him yesterday.

Tonight it sounded exhausted.

A few minutes later Chloe sent another message.

MOM SAYS DON'T LET THEM OPEN THE BOX IF THEY FIND IT.

Dominic stared at the screen.

"What box?"

Nobody knew yet.

The message arrived before Malcolm reported Eleanor in the garage.

Later, Dominic would realize Chloe had accidentally warned them about the very records her mother was trying to remove.

Pressure was making the Mercers careless.

The more desperately they tried to control the story, the more evidence they created.

Amanda stared at him.

"When?"

"About fifteen minutes before the ring stunt."

Everyone went quiet.

Vivienne felt the pieces shift again.

"What was she doing?"

Bryce rubbed his jaw.

"She said she wanted to make sure the livestream wasn't showing the service corridor because she was going to hide there before the bouquet toss."

Naomi frowned.

"The livestream cameras do not cover the service corridor."

Bryce looked at her.

"I know that now."

"At the time I thought she was nervous and being obsessive."

Malcolm asked.

"Did she use the laptop?"

"Yes."

"For how long?"

"Maybe two minutes."

Elise looked at Victor.

The implication was obvious.

Chloe might have explored the venue network before the accusation began.

But that still did not explain the login attempt after the footage was preserved.

Bryce seemed to realize the same thing.

"Wait."

He looked at Malcolm.

"What time was the failed login?"

Malcolm told him.

Bryce's disappearance made Chloe frantic in a way the ring accusation had not.

For all her confidence, she relied heavily on his approval.

During the engagement, she repeatedly described Bryce as the first man who "understood her standards."

Amanda now suspected what Chloe really meant was that Bryce rarely challenged her in public.

In private, however, their arguments were different.

Bryce had pushed back on the ballooning wedding budget.

He questioned why Eleanor needed to approve their apartment furniture.

He once refused to change honeymoon dates because Chloe's mother preferred a different week.

Each disagreement ended with Chloe calling Dominic and asking how he tolerated people who "didn't understand family."

Vivienne heard this history and saw another pattern.

Eleanor had not simply controlled her children.

She had taught them to treat outside boundaries as betrayal.

Bryce entering the production office was therefore more than a missing groom wandering away from a reception.

It was a man reaching the limit of how much reality he could ignore.

When security found him, the first thing he asked was whether the livestream file could be permanently removed.

Not because he wanted to destroy hotel evidence, he later insisted, but because he could already imagine Chloe demanding that he spend their honeymoon fighting strangers online.

"I wanted one thing from tonight not to become content," he said.

Vivienne understood the impulse better than she wanted to.

Bryce shook his head.

"I was already in the production office then."

"Were you alone?"

Bryce opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Vivienne noticed.

"Who was with you?"

Bryce looked toward Dominic.

Dominic's face tightened.

Bryce exhaled.

"Eleanor."

The room froze.

Dominic stared at him.

"My mother?"

"She came in through the other door."

"She told me Chloe needed me upstairs."

"I left the laptop unlocked when I stepped into the hallway to find her."

Malcolm asked.

"How long was Mrs. Mercer alone with it?"

Bryce's expression darkened.

"Long enough."

Dominic sat down heavily.

Vivienne looked at him.

His entire understanding of his mother was unraveling one piece at a time.

The woman who claimed everything she did was for family had tried to turn her pregnant daughter-in-law into evidence.

Then, after the plan failed, she may have tried to reach the recordings that exposed it.

Victor looked at Malcolm.

"Where is Eleanor now?"

Malcolm checked his radio.

His expression changed.

"She left the ballroom."

Vivienne stood.

"When?"

"Three minutes ago."

"With Chloe?"

"No."

Malcolm listened to his earpiece.

Then his face hardened.

"She's in the underground garage."

Victor headed toward the door.

Elise stopped him with one sentence.

"Victor, let security handle it."

He stopped.

She was right.

Vivienne looked at Malcolm.

"Is she alone?"

Malcolm listened again.

"No."

"She's standing beside Dominic's car."

Dominic rose.

"Why is she at my car?"

Malcolm's next words made the room go silent.

"Because she appears to be removing a document box from the trunk."
