Chapter 4 - The Promise He Made Them.

Dominic stood beneath the chandelier as if the light had become an interrogation lamp.

Vivienne stared at him.

The ballroom around them seemed to disappear.

She heard only one sentence.

He already promised me he wouldn't.

Dominic shook his head.

"That's not what it sounds like."

Vivienne almost smiled at the absurdity.

"Then tell me what it sounds like."

He looked toward Chloe.

She refused to meet his eyes.

That was answer enough.

Victor remained silent near Vivienne's shoulder.

He could have destroyed Dominic with one sentence.

Instead, he let his daughter ask the question.

"What did you promise her?"

Dominic rubbed both palms against the sides of his trousers.

"Chloe said she was going to confront you tonight."

"About what?"

"About money."

Vivienne blinked.

"Money?"

Eleanor interrupted.

"This is a family matter."

Victor looked at her.

"You stopped being entitled to privacy when you turned a ballroom into a public accusation."

Dominic exhaled hard.

"Mom and Chloe believed you were hiding things from me."

Vivienne glanced down at the executive access card.

"They were right about one thing."

Dominic's eyes lifted.

"I kept my family's finances private."

"That's not a crime."

She held his gaze.

"Neither is wearing inexpensive clothes."

A guest nearby lowered her face to hide a smile.

Dominic stepped closer.

"They thought you were planning to leave me."

"Why?"

"Because you met with an attorney two weeks ago."

Vivienne felt a jolt of anger.

"How do they know that?"

Dominic looked at Eleanor.

Vivienne followed his gaze.

Eleanor folded her arms.

"I saw the appointment on the shared family calendar."

Vivienne stared at Dominic.

"You gave your mother access to our calendar?"

"It was for scheduling family events."

"She was reading my private appointments."

"I didn't know she was doing that."

"You never know anything until after your family hurts me."

The sentence landed heavily.

Dominic's shoulders dropped.

"I know how this looks."

"No."

Vivienne's voice became softer.

"You know how it is."

Chloe moved toward him.

"Dominic, don't let her twist this."

He turned on his sister.

"You planted your ring."

"To prove a point."

"What point?"

"That she has secrets."

Vivienne stared at her.

"So you falsely accused me of theft because you suspected I had private finances?"

Chloe's cheeks flushed.

"You married into our family and acted like you were above everyone."

A laugh escaped Amanda.

"She never acted above anyone."

Chloe glared at her.

Amanda continued.

"You hated that she never competed with you."

The words hit their mark.

Chloe's mouth tightened.

Amanda looked at Vivienne.

"She used to complain that you didn't react when she insulted you."

"She said it made her feel invisible."

Chloe snapped.

"Nobody asked you."

Amanda looked back at her.

"You asked me to hide a million-dollar ring."

"I think I've earned a sentence."

Several guests murmured agreement.

Eleanor stepped toward Victor.

"Mr. Laurent, this has become unnecessarily dramatic."

Victor's expression did not change.

"Your daughter staged a theft."

"My daughter made a mistake."

"Your son agreed not to intervene."

"Dominic didn't know about the ring."

Vivienne turned toward him.

"Is that true?"

Dominic answered immediately.

"Yes."

"I swear."

She watched his face.

"What did you know?"

Dominic's voice dropped.

"I knew Chloe wanted to embarrass you."

Dominic remembered a dinner two weeks earlier when Chloe had joked that Vivienne would finally be forced to "show her cards" at the wedding.

He had asked what she meant.

Chloe smiled and said Eleanor wanted a family conversation about honesty.

Dominic knew enough to feel uneasy and not enough to imagine a staged theft.

That distinction became the refuge he tried to use now.

Vivienne would not let him hide there.

"You knew they planned to corner me," she said.

Dominic nodded.

"Yes."

"And you decided the safest thing for you was to let it happen."

He looked down.

"Yes."

The admission did not make her feel better.

It made the shape of the betrayal cleaner.

He had not been tricked into silence in a sudden chaotic moment.

He had rehearsed his silence in advance.

When Chloe screamed, he had already decided that whatever happened next was something Vivienne should endure long enough to produce answers.

He simply failed to imagine how cruel his family was willing to become once nobody stopped them.

The honesty was somehow worse than another lie.

"How?"

"She said she was going to make you explain why you'd been meeting with a lawyer."

"And you promised not to stop her."

Dominic closed his eyes.

"I thought if it came out in front of everyone, you would finally tell me what was happening."

Vivienne stared at him.

"You wanted your sister to publicly corner your pregnant wife because you were too afraid to ask me a question in private."

Dominic opened his eyes.

"When you say it like that—"

"There is no other way to say it."

He looked devastated.

Vivienne felt no satisfaction.

Only exhaustion.

The attorney appointment had nothing to do with leaving him.

She had met Elise to update her estate plan before the baby arrived.

She had planned to place part of her inheritance into a protected trust for their child.

She had even asked Elise how to structure something for Dominic if anything happened to her.

The irony was almost unbearable.

"Do you want to know why I met with an attorney?" Vivienne asked.

Dominic nodded.

"Yes."

"I was updating my estate plan for our daughter."

His face emptied.

"Our daughter?"

Vivienne put a hand on her stomach.

The estate appointment had been one of the happiest errands Vivienne had completed that month.

She had sat across from Elise discussing guardianship, education accounts, and the kind of future she wanted for a child who had not yet been born.

Vivienne insisted that any inheritance for her daughter include safeguards against entitlement.

Victor had teased her for drafting values into financial documents.

Vivienne had replied that wealth without character was simply expensive chaos.

The phrase felt painfully relevant now.

She had also asked Elise to prepare a provision for Dominic.

Not because he needed Laurent money, but because Vivienne wanted him protected if she died unexpectedly.

She had left the meeting planning to surprise him with the baby's sex and later discuss the documents over breakfast.

Instead, Eleanor saw an attorney appointment and built a conspiracy around it.

Dominic saw his family's fear and chose suspicion over conversation.

The tragedy was almost ordinary.

One direct question could have prevented weeks of paranoia.

One private conversation could have exposed the misunderstanding.

Instead, the Mercers had chosen surveillance, pressure, and public humiliation because those methods gave them control.

Vivienne thought about the daughter growing inside her.

She knew children watched adults long before they understood words.

She suddenly became grateful her daughter would never remember this version of their marriage.

Whatever came next, the lesson would not be that a wife should tolerate disrespect to keep relatives comfortable.

"I found out at my appointment last week."

Dominic's eyes filled with shock.

"You know it's a girl?"

"I was going to tell you tomorrow."

A silence passed between them that felt like a funeral for something that had existed that morning.

Dominic's eyes dropped to her stomach.

"Vivienne..."

She stepped away.

"Don't use her to make this smaller."

He stopped.

Victor's jaw tightened.

Eleanor looked momentarily ashamed.

Then her expression changed again.

Calculation returned.

"If this was just an estate appointment, then surely we can all put this behind us."

Vivienne turned toward her slowly.

"You ripped my dress open in front of two hundred people."

Eleanor's lips tightened.

"I was trying to protect my daughter."

"From a theft your daughter invented."

"I didn't know that."

Amanda spoke from the entrance.

"You knew more than you're saying."

Eleanor's head snapped toward her.

"Be careful."

Amanda's face hardened.

"That's the second time you've warned me tonight."

Elise stepped forward.

"Ms. Bell, do you have information relevant to what happened?"

Amanda hesitated.

Her eyes moved to Chloe.

Then Eleanor.

Then Dominic.

"I have texts."

Eleanor's face changed.

Amanda noticed.

"A lot of texts."

Chloe whispered.

"Amanda."

Amanda shook her head.

"No."

"I'm done protecting people who would let me take the blame for them."

She unlocked her phone again.

"The ring was Chloe's idea."

She looked directly at Eleanor.

"But the plan to search Vivienne wasn't."

The room went silent.

Vivienne's skin prickled.

Amanda raised the phone.
