Chapter 5 - The Messages Behind the Smiles.

Eleanor did not deny it immediately.
That was the first mistake.
She simply stared at Amanda's phone as if she could make it disappear by refusing to blink.
Vivienne noticed Victor shift beside her.
Elise opened a small notebook.
Malcolm remained near the security table.
Every person in the ballroom seemed to understand that the evening had moved beyond a missing ring.
Amanda scrolled through her messages.
"Three days ago, Eleanor started a family group chat without Vivienne."
Dominic frowned.
"What group chat?"
Amanda looked at him.
"You weren't in it either."
That surprised him.
Chloe muttered.
"Don't."
Amanda ignored her.
"The first message said, 'Tomorrow night we finally find out what she's hiding.'"
Eleanor cut in.
"That could mean anything."
Amanda continued.
"Then you wrote, 'If she refuses to open her purse, make sure everyone notices.'"
A low murmur moved through the guests.
Eleanor's cheeks colored.
"I was concerned about my son."
"Concern doesn't require an audience," Vivienne said.
Eleanor looked at her.
"You kept secrets from your husband."
"My father's net worth was not part of our marriage vows."
"Your family owns this hotel."
"And somehow that only became important to you after you learned it."
The words silenced Eleanor for a moment.
Amanda kept reading.
"Chloe replied, 'She acts like she's too good to react. I want to see her crack.'"
Chloe looked toward the guests.
Her face burned.
Amanda swiped again.
"Eleanor wrote, 'Dominic will stand down. He always does when things get uncomfortable.'"
Dominic stared at his mother.
For the first time that night, his hurt seemed directed somewhere other than himself.
"You wrote that?"
Eleanor looked at him.
"I know my son."
Dominic's face tightened.
"Apparently you do."
Vivienne felt the cruelty of the sentence because it was true.
Eleanor had not merely counted on Dominic's silence.
She had built the plan around it.
Amanda's next message was worse.
"Then Eleanor wrote, 'Once Vivienne is embarrassed enough, she'll either show what she's hiding or leave. Either outcome helps us.'"
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"Helps you with what?"
Eleanor said nothing.
Amanda looked at Chloe.
Chloe shook her head desperately.
"Don't drag business into this."
Victor heard the word.
"Business?"
Elise stopped writing.
Vivienne looked at Dominic.
His face showed genuine confusion now.
"What business?"
Amanda swallowed.
"I don't know all of it."
"But I heard Chloe and Eleanor arguing last week."
Eleanor's voice turned hard.
"Amanda, you have said enough."
Amanda laughed without humor.
"You told me I was family when you needed me to hide a ring."
"Now I'm suddenly a problem because I remember conversations?"
She looked toward Victor.
"They were worried Vivienne was going to discover something about Mercer Development."
Dominic stepped forward.
"Discover what?"
Amanda shook her head.
"I don't know."
Chloe interrupted.
"She's making things up because she's scared."
Amanda turned toward her.
"Then explain the invoice folder."
Chloe went completely still.
Victor noticed.
So did Elise.
Vivienne's stomach tightened, not with pain but with instinct.
"What invoice folder?"
Amanda hesitated.
"The one Eleanor told Chloe to remove from Dominic's home office before the wedding."
Dominic stared at his sister.
"You went into my office?"
Chloe recovered quickly.
"Mom asked me to pick up some tax documents."
"Without telling me?"
"You were busy."
Dominic stepped closer.
"What folder?"
Eleanor cut between them.
"This has nothing to do with tonight."
Victor spoke for the first time in several minutes.
"That depends entirely on what's inside it."
Eleanor looked at him.
"You have no right to interfere with our private company."
Victor's expression remained calm.
"I own the building where you staged a false theft accusation against my daughter."
He glanced toward Malcolm.
"And if the word 'invoice' refers to what I think it does, I may have considerably more interest than that."
Dominic turned toward him.
"What do you mean?"
Victor looked at Vivienne first.
She could see he was deciding how much to say.
"Mercer Development has been a subcontractor on three Laurent Hospitality renovation projects over the last eighteen months."
Dominic blinked.
"What?"
Victor nodded.
"Through an intermediary vendor."
"You didn't know?"
Dominic shook his head slowly.
"I knew we had hotel contracts."
"I didn't know they were yours."
Vivienne's mind began connecting things.
Eleanor's sudden interest in her attorney appointment.
Chloe entering Dominic's home office.
The missing invoice folder.
The effort to humiliate Vivienne publicly.
It had never been only about disliking her.
They were afraid she would find something.
"Dad," Vivienne said.
Victor looked at her.
"Were there problems with those contracts?"
He paused.
"There were questions."
Eleanor's face went pale.
Dominic turned toward his mother.
"What questions?"
Victor answered.
"Duplicate billing."
The words were quiet.
"Unexplained change orders."
"Consulting charges routed through an entity we couldn't identify."
Dominic stared at Eleanor.
"You told me accounting had cleared everything."
Eleanor snapped.
"Because they had."
Victor's attorney looked up.
"No."
Elise's voice was crisp.
"Our internal review is still open."
Eleanor's eyes moved to her.
Elise continued.
"And yesterday we learned the unidentified consulting entity is registered to a post office box associated with a Mercer family trust."
The ballroom erupted again.
Dominic looked stunned.
Chloe looked furious.
Eleanor looked at Vivienne with pure hatred.
There it was.
The emotion Vivienne had spent three years pretending not to see.
This was not simple class contempt.
Eleanor had feared her.
Not because Vivienne was poor.
Because Eleanor could never determine how much Vivienne knew.
Dominic had always described Mercer Development as a family success story.
His grandfather started with two pickup trucks and a small contracting crew.
His father expanded into commercial renovation.
Eleanor took control after his death and doubled the company's visible footprint within five years.
Vivienne had admired that resilience from a distance.
She had never asked to see financial statements because the company was not hers.
Now she wondered how often respectable appearances had been used to discourage questions.
At family dinners, Eleanor spoke about loyalty more than profit.
She praised people who "kept family business inside the family."
Vivienne once thought it was an old-fashioned preference for privacy.
Tonight the phrase sounded more like policy.
Dominic seemed to reach the same conclusion.
He sat down briefly, elbows on his knees, and stared at the floor as Amanda described the missing invoice folder.
"My father hated hidden accounts," he said quietly.
Eleanor snapped that his father was dead and could not understand modern pressures.
The cruelty of that response made Dominic look up.
Vivienne saw the first fracture between them become visible.
For years Eleanor had invoked her late husband whenever it strengthened her authority.
The moment his standards became inconvenient, she dismissed him.
Dominic noticed.
He said nothing yet.
But this silence no longer looked obedient.
It looked like a man beginning to examine the structure of his own life.
Vivienne stepped closer.
"You thought I found the invoices."
Eleanor did not answer.
"That's why you went through our calendar."
Still nothing.
"That's why you wanted to search my purse."
Eleanor finally spoke.
"You are imagining motives because you're upset."
Vivienne glanced down at her torn dress.
"I am past upset."
Chloe grabbed her mother's arm.
"We should leave."
Malcolm spoke immediately.
"The missing ring report still needs to be documented."
Chloe glared at him.
"I found my ring."
"Your cousin had it after you handed it to her."
"Then there's no theft."
Elise stepped forward.
"There may still be issues involving the false accusation and what occurred afterward."
Eleanor's face hardened.
"Are you threatening us?"
Elise shook her head.
"I'm preserving facts."
Victor looked at Malcolm.
"Save every camera angle from six o'clock until now."
"Already being done."
"Good."
Then Victor looked at Dominic.
"Your family needs to leave my daughter's immediate space."
Dominic swallowed.
"She's my wife."
Victor's gaze did not change.
"Then start acting like her husband."
The sentence hit Dominic visibly.
Vivienne looked away.
Naomi approached her quietly.
"We have a private suite upstairs if you want somewhere to sit."
Vivienne nodded.
The baby had begun moving more forcefully.
She needed quiet.
She needed water.
Most of all, she needed distance from the Mercer family.
As she turned toward the private elevator, Dominic followed.
"Vivienne, please."
She stopped without turning.
"Not tonight."
"I need to explain."
"No."
She looked back at him.
"You need to decide how many things you knew before you start deciding how to explain them."
Dominic went pale.
That reaction caught her attention.
"What else is there?"
He did not answer.
Vivienne's pulse quickened.
"Dominic."
Chloe shouted from behind them.
"Don't tell her."
The entire room went silent again.
Dominic closed his eyes.
Vivienne turned slowly toward Chloe.
