No one in the room spoke.
Marcus could hear only the faint hum of the ultrasound machine as Dr. Nathan Vance folded his hands together.
"I'm afraid there's something you need to know," the doctor said carefully.
Marcus forced a nervous laugh.
"Just tell us if it's a boy."
Dr. Vance looked directly at Penelope.
"I'm sorry... but this pregnancy is not as far along as your medical records claim."
Penelope's smile disappeared.
"What does that mean?"
The doctor opened her previous lab reports.
"Based on today's measurements, the fetus is approximately twelve weeks old."
Marcus frowned.
"That's impossible."
"You listed the conception date as nearly twenty weeks ago."
Silence.
Dr. Vance continued.
"The dates don't match."
Marcus slowly turned toward Penelope.
"You told me you found out you were pregnant before Julianne even filed for divorce."
"I..."
"You said the baby was conceived during our anniversary trip."
Penelope's lips trembled.
Dr. Vance lowered his voice.
"I'm not making any accusations. I'm simply stating the medical facts. The conception occurred nearly two months later than the date provided."
Roxanne's face turned pale.
Marcus stared at Penelope as if he had never seen her before.
"Whose child is this?"
Penelope immediately burst into tears.
"Marcus... please... let me explain..."
