PART 5 — The Truth Comes Out

PART 5 — The Truth Comes Out

Three weeks later, Jasper requested a meeting.

Against everyone's advice, I agreed.

Not because I wanted reconciliation.

Because I wanted closure.

He looked exhausted.

His expensive suits had been replaced by wrinkled jackets.

Dark circles framed his eyes.

"I didn't know," he said quietly.

"I swear."

"You didn't know who I was?"

I asked.

"No."

"I didn't care whether you were rich."

"I cared how you treated me."

He lowered his head.

"I made mistakes."

"Mistakes?"

I looked at Toby sleeping peacefully in his stroller.

"You left your wife to ride a city bus five days after major surgery."

"You never even asked if your son got home safely."

His voice cracked.

"I can change."

I smiled sadly.

"I believe people can change."

"But not every relationship survives long enough to see it."

I slid divorce papers across the table.

"They're fair."

"I'll never keep Toby from knowing his father."

"But you'll earn that privilege by becoming one."

He signed without another word.

As he stood to leave, he stopped.

"I'm sorry."

This time...

I believed he meant it.

But forgiveness and reconciliation were never the same thing.
