Chapter 5: A Father Finally Tells the Truth
One evening, several weeks after the trial, Arthur and Lily sat together on the front porch of his small house.
For the first time in months, she looked peaceful.
"Dad," she asked softly, "who were you before you became... just my dad?"
Arthur smiled.
"I wasn't anyone important."
She laughed.
"I know that's not true."
He looked toward the sunset.
"When your mother became sick, I left a government career that required secrecy and constant danger. I wanted one job after that."
"What job?"
"Being your father."
Lily reached over and held his hand.
"You were never ordinary."
Arthur shook his head.
"I wasn't extraordinary because of what I used to do."
He looked at his daughter.
"I was extraordinary because I never stopped coming when you called."
Lily rested her head on his shoulder.
