Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything

For several long seconds, Arthur listened without saying a word.
The calm voice on the satellite phone finally asked,
"Identity confirmation?"
"Arthur Miller. Authorization Delta-Seven. Code Black."
A brief pause followed.
Then the reply came.
"Confirmed. Federal Protective Operations has been notified. Estimated response: twelve minutes. Are civilians in immediate danger?"
"Yes," Arthur answered, watching the Whitmore mansion through his windshield. "One confirmed assault victim. Possible witness intimidation. Local law enforcement may be compromised."
"Understood. Do not engage. Preserve evidence."
Arthur ended the call.
Lily looked at him with frightened eyes.
"Dad... who were you talking to?"
Arthur looked ahead.
"Someone I hoped I'd never have to call again."
Inside the mansion, Richard laughed as he watched Arthur's truck pull away.
"He finally gave up," Richard told the guests.
Margaret smiled with satisfaction.
"I told you. Men like Arthur always know their place."
None of them noticed the black SUVs entering town from three different directions.
None of them noticed the unmarked helicopter flying several thousand feet overhead.
And none of them realized that Lily's phone was still recording every word inside the living room.
Fifteen minutes later, the first federal agents quietly arrived at the county hospital where Arthur had taken Lily.
Doctors immediately documented fractured ribs, severe bruising, strangulation marks, and multiple older injuries that clearly hadn't happened that day.
One physician looked up from the report.
"This abuse has been going on for months."
Arthur closed his eyes.

He had failed to see it.
But he wasn't going to fail her again.
