Chapter 2: The Truth Buried for Twenty Years

Chapter 2: The Truth Buried for Twenty Years
"No..."
Victoria whispered.
"That's impossible."
Tony turned toward Helen.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Helen laughed bitterly through her tears.
"I tried."
She reached into the pocket of her uniform and pulled out an old bundle of yellowed letters.
"They were all returned."
Tony recognized his own handwriting on the unopened envelopes.
Someone had intercepted every letter.
Every single one.
His father.
The late Richard Mercer.
Twenty years earlier...
Richard had paid people to make Helen disappear.
He believed the poor waitress would ruin the Mercer family name.
Tony was told Helen had run away with another man.
Helen was told Tony wanted nothing to do with her.
Both lies.
Both victims.
Helen looked down at Ethan.
"When I found out I was pregnant, I had nothing."
"So I worked."
"I cleaned rooms."
"I washed dishes."
"I did everything I could."
"I only wanted my son to grow up with dignity."
Tony's knees gave out.
He collapsed in front of her.
"I'm so sorry."
