Chapter 1: The Name That Stopped the Music

Chapter 1: The Name That Stopped the Music

The ballroom fell into a silence so complete that even the orchestra lowered their instruments.

Tony Mercer stood frozen, unable to take his eyes off the woman holding the crying child.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of searching.

Twenty years of believing she had abandoned him.

And now she was here...

Wearing a faded tan housekeeping uniform.

"Helen..." he whispered again, his voice breaking.

The maid slowly lifted her head.

Tears streamed down her face.

She had imagined this moment thousands of times.

But never like this.

Never in front of hundreds of strangers.

The bride, Victoria, stepped between them.

"Tony, have you lost your mind?" she snapped.

"This woman cleans hotel rooms."

Tony didn't even glance at her.

He walked toward Helen, every step shaking.

"You... you're alive."

Helen couldn't answer.

She simply nodded.

Little Ethan clung tightly to her waist, confused by the strange adults staring at them.

Tony looked down at the little boy.

His heart nearly stopped.

The child had Helen's eyes...

And his own smile.

"Who is he?"

Helen closed her eyes.

"My son."

Tony stared in disbelief.

"Our son."

Gasps spread across the ballroom.

The guests couldn't believe what they had just heard.

Victoria's bouquet slipped from her fingers.

It hit the marble floor with a dull thud.
