Chapter 5: The Heir to the Throne

The FBI dragged a screaming, thrashing Eleanor out of the Sterling Plaza. This time, there were no fake tears. She spat curses at Arthur, at Marcus, and swore she would burn the Sterling Empire to the ground.
Marcus watched his bride get shoved into the back of a black SUV. He looked completely shattered, a broken prince who had just realized his entire fairytale was a meticulously planned assassination attempt.
Up in the VIP room, the atmosphere was far from celebratory.
Arthur had barricaded the door again. Only he, Maya, and a heavily medicated, barely conscious Julian were inside. Julian had been secretly wheeled up via the private freight elevator.
Julian coughed, a wet, rattling sound, clutching the bandage on his neck. He looked at Maya and offered a weak, bloody smile. "You got it... didn't you?"
"I have the drive," Maya said, stepping closer to him. "You used me, Julian. You didn't care about my mother. You just needed my DNA to unlock the Genesis files."
"I... needed a weapon," Julian wheezed, his eyes darting to Arthur. "He took everything from me. My father took the fall for his illegal patents. He died in prison... so Arthur could be a king."
Arthur stood perfectly still, his face an unreadable mask. "Your father was a weak man, Julian. He made a choice."
"And so did I," Julian smiled bitterly. He looked at Maya. "Press your thumb... to the scanner. End him."
Maya looked at the flash drive in her hand. Then she looked at Arthur Sterling. The man who had allegedly killed her mother. The man who ruled the city with an iron fist.
She pressed her thumb against the cracked biometric scanner.
A green light pulsed. DNA MATCH: VANCE, EVELYN (LINEAGE CONFIRMED).
The tablet screen turned black, then lines of code rapidly scrolled down. A video file popped up. It wasn't a document. It wasn't a bank statement. It was a video recorded twenty years ago.
The screen showed a young, terrified woman in a lab coat—Evelyn Vance. Maya’s mother.
"If you are watching this," the woman on the screen spoke, her voice trembling, "it means Arthur Sterling is dead. And it means my daughter, Maya, has finally claimed her inheritance."
Arthur stepped back, his eyes wide in genuine shock. "No... that's impossible."
"Arthur is not the founder of this company," Evelyn's recorded voice continued, dropping a bomb that would destroy the financial world. "He was just the enforcer. The real genius behind Project Genesis, the true owner of the Sterling Empire... is me. And under corporate law, upon my death, 100% of the voting shares transfer to my only child."
Maya stared at the screen, her breath catching in her throat.
She wasn't a waitress. She wasn't just an illegitimate daughter of a dead scientist.
As of this exact moment, Maya Vance was the sole owner of a $40 billion empire.

Arthur Sterling looked at the girl in the torn catering uniform. Slowly, the billionaire dropped to his knees.
"What are your orders... Boss?" Arthur whispered.
