Chapter 15: The Queen's Gambit

One Month Later.
The morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the CEO’s office at the top of the Sterling Tower. The city of New York bustled below, completely unaware of the war that had been fought and won beneath its streets.
Maya sat behind the massive mahogany desk. She wore a stunning, tailored white suit, radiating an aura of absolute, terrifying control. She was no longer a frightened waitress, nor a confused heir. She was the Queen of the board.
The double doors opened, and Arthur walked in. He looked tired, older, but there was a quiet peace about him that hadn't been there before.
"The final reports are in," Arthur said, placing a tablet on her desk. "The sub-basement has been entirely filled with concrete. Officially, it was a structural reinforcement project. The board asked no questions."
"And Marcus?" Maya asked, signing a document without looking up.
"Physical therapy is going well. The bullet missed the artery. He’s... he’s finding his way. He asked me to thank you for keeping him out of prison."
Maya nodded. Marcus was broken, but he had proven his worth in the end. He had saved her mother's life.
"And our other problem?" Maya asked, finally looking up, her eyes narrowing.
Arthur smiled, a dark, familiar smirk. "Taken care of. Eleanor Sterling’s federal trial began today. Without Thorne’s influence, and with the mysterious disappearance of her offshore accounts, she couldn't afford the legal team she wanted. Her public defender is negotiating a plea deal. Thirty years in maximum security."
"Make sure her cell is in the basement," Maya said coldly. "I want her to remember what it feels like to be buried."
Arthur nodded respectfully. He turned to leave, but stopped at the door. "Your mother asked me to join her for dinner tonight. At the estate in the Hamptons."
Maya smiled softly. Evelyn was recovering, living under heavy security, finally free from the ice and the fear. "You should go, Arthur. I think she’s finally ready to forgive you."
"Are you?" Arthur asked, looking back at her.
Maya leaned back in her high leather chair, resting her hands on the desk. She looked at the man who had ruled the city with an iron fist, a man who now answered to her.
"I don't believe in forgiveness, Arthur," Maya said, her voice smooth, calculated, and sharp. "I believe in leverage. And as long as you remain useful to my empire, you have a place in it."
Arthur gave a slow, respectful bow. "Understood, Boss."
As the door clicked shut, Maya turned her chair to look out over the sprawling metropolis. She had burned Project Genesis to save the world, but she had kept her mother's brilliant mind. The genetic AI was gone, but the Sterling Empire was vast, powerful, and hungry.
She picked up a glass of champagne from her desk, the crystal catching the morning light.

"To new beginnings," she whispered to the empty room, and took a sip.
The Queen had claimed her throne. And her reign had only just begun.
