Chapter 11: The Vault of Secrets

The private elevator plunged into the earth at a sickening speed. Maya gripped the brass handrail, her knuckles turning white, while Arthur stood beside her like a statue carved from ice. The digital floor indicator blinked past the parking garages, descending into the restricted subterranean levels of the Sterling Tower.

Sector 4. A place that officially did not exist on any blueprints.

"How is she alive?" Maya demanded, her voice barely audible over the hum of the elevator shaft. "You told me she jumped! You told me you built a fortress around her legacy, but you had her locked in a basement like a lab rat!"

"I swear to you, Maya, I didn't know," Arthur said. For the first time since she had met him, the billionaire looked genuinely rattled. The mask of absolute control had slipped. "Twenty years ago, the bridge incident... the police found her shoes. They found a suicide note. The body was never recovered because of the currents. That’s the official story, and that’s what I believed."

"Then who put her down there?"

The elevator ground to a violent halt. The metal doors slid open, revealing a long, brutalist concrete corridor lit by flickering, blood-red emergency lights. At the far end stood the massive titanium vault door, wide open.

Maya and Arthur sprinted down the hallway. When they burst into the Genesis server room, the sheer scale of the hidden facility stole Maya’s breath. Towering black mainframes, blinking with thousands of green LED lights, lined the walls. But the center of the room was dominated by a circular, elevated platform. On it rested a state-of-the-art cryogenic pod.

Inside the frosted glass, Evelyn Vance lay perfectly still. She looked exactly as she had in the twenty-year-old video—suspended in time, a ghost trapped in ice.

Standing in front of the pod was Marcus. He held a thick, black leather ledger in his shaking hands.

"Marcus!" Arthur barked, his authoritative voice returning. "Put that down and step away from the terminal!"

Marcus spun around, his eyes wild and bloodshot. He looked like a cornered animal. "No! You lied to me, Dad! You lied to everyone!"

"Marcus, listen to me," Maya took a cautious step forward, raising her hands peacefully. "Eleanor is manipulating you. Whatever she told you to do, it's a trap. She doesn't care about you; she just wants control of this company."

"She loves me!" Marcus screamed, waving the ledger. "She’s the only one who didn't lie! She told me you were hiding the truth down here. Victor Thorne told her everything!"

At the mention of that name, Arthur’s blood ran cold. "Victor? Marcus, you didn't contact Victor Thorne, did you?"

Before Marcus could answer, the shadows in the corner of the room seemed to detach themselves from the walls. Four men, dressed in unmarked, urban tactical gear and armed with suppressed submachine guns, stepped into the red light.

And walking slowly behind them, leaning on a silver-tipped cane, was a tall, skeletal man with hollow cheeks and eyes as black as pitch.

"Hello, Arthur," Victor Thorne purred, his voice like dry leaves scraping across pavement. "It’s been a long time."

Thorne looked at the cryogenic pod, then at Maya. A cruel, reptilian smile stretched across his face. "And you must be little Maya. I must say, you have your mother’s eyes. But let’s see if you have her brain."
