Chapter 1 – The Call That Changed Everything

Chapter 1 – The Call That Changed Everything
Evelyn bent down slowly, ignoring the icy rain soaking through her clothes, and picked up the muddy velvet box with trembling hands.
Her fingers tightened around it.
Not because of the ring.
Because it reminded her of the only promise in her life that had never been broken.
Her father's.
She pulled her phone from her coat pocket. The screen was cracked from hitting the driveway, but it still worked.
Nathaniel smirked.
"Calling your friends? Nobody's coming."
Evelyn didn't answer.
She pressed one number.
The call connected before the first ring finished.
"Dad..."
Her voice broke.
"...come get me."
Silence.
Then she added,
"And bring the legal team."
On the other end, Richard Brooks didn't ask a single question.
"I'm leaving now."
The line disconnected.
Nathaniel laughed.
"A legal team? Your father owns a bookstore."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You've believed that for four years."
Patricia folded her arms.
"Please. We investigated your family before the wedding. Your father lives in a quiet neighborhood. No luxury cars. No security. No political connections."
Evelyn almost smiled.
Because everything they had investigated...
Had been carefully arranged.
Richard Brooks had spent thirty years hiding his real identity after his wife was kidnapped because of his wealth.
He had sold his public companies.
Changed his surname.
Transferred ownership into private trusts.
The world believed he had disappeared.
Only a handful of government officials knew the truth.
Nathaniel had married the richest man's daughter...
Without ever realizing it.
Ten minutes later...
Headlights appeared through the rain.
Not one car.
Not two.
Eight identical black SUVs rolled toward the Harper estate.
Every vehicle stopped in perfect formation.
The engines shut off simultaneously.
Dozens of men in tailored black suits stepped out.
Umbrellas opened at the same time.
The front SUV door opened last.
A silver-haired man stepped into the rain.
Richard Brooks.
His eyes ignored everyone except his daughter.
"Evelyn."
She burst into tears.
"Dad..."
He wrapped his coat around her shoulders before turning toward Nathaniel.
His voice became ice.
"Who threw my pregnant daughter into the street?"
Nobody answered.
Not even Patricia.

For the first time in years...
She looked afraid.
