Chapter 3: After the Storm

The front door closed.
Softly.
But it sounded like the end of something.
The house didn’t suddenly become peaceful. It was still messy, still loud in its own way. The baby had calmed slightly in Mark’s arms, but occasional cries still broke through like leftover echoes of the chaos.
Mark stood in the middle of the living room, holding the child carefully, as if he was afraid of how fragile everything had become.
His wife was still in the kitchen.
She hadn’t moved.
Not until he walked over and placed the baby gently back into her arms.
This time, she didn’t cry immediately.
She just looked at him.
Like she didn’t understand why it took so long for someone to notice.
Mark exhaled.
“I’m sorry,” he said quietly.
Not for the confrontation.
For everything before it.
The silence that followed wasn’t heavy anymore.
It was healing in progress.
She shook her head slightly, exhausted but no longer alone in it.
“I thought I had to handle it all,” she whispered.
Mark looked at her for a long moment.
“No,” he said. “You were never supposed to.”
Outside, the house stayed the same.
May you like
But inside, something had finally changed.
And for the first time in a long time… it felt like a home again.
