Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out

The guests didn’t leave right away.

Instead, they shifted uneasily, like people trying to regain control of a situation they had already lost. One of them stood up slowly, grabbing her purse, but still tried to salvage her pride.

“This is ridiculous,” she muttered. “We were just sitting here. We didn’t do anything wrong.”

Mark finally turned fully toward them.

His expression didn’t change.

But his voice did—colder now, sharper.

“You didn’t do anything,” he said, “and that’s the problem.”

The words hung in the air.

Behind him, his wife finally broke. Not loudly—just a quiet, exhausted sound as she looked down at the baby in her arms. Like she was ashamed someone was finally seeing all of it at once.

Mark walked over to her.

Carefully, gently, he took the baby from her arms. The moment the weight shifted, she almost collapsed with relief.

Then he looked back at the women.

“My wife has been handling everything alone,” he said. “While you sit here like it’s a lounge.”

One of the women rolled her eyes, but it didn’t have the same effect anymore. The room had changed. The balance had shifted.

Mark continued.

“You’re not guests. You’re spectators. And I don’t allow that in my home.”

That word—home—hit differently.

Because now it wasn’t just about comfort.

It was about respect.

The women exchanged a glance. For the first time, there was no comeback ready.

Only silence.

Finally, one of them grabbed the other’s arm.

“Let’s just go,” she muttered.

And this time, they moved toward the door without another word.
