Chapter 1: The Breaking Point

The room didn’t move.

Not at first.

The only sound was the baby’s cry echoing through the kitchen, sharp and exhausting, cutting through the thick silence that followed Mark’s arrival. The two women on the couch slowly lowered their phones, their expressions shifting from annoyance to uncertainty.

One of them let out a short, dismissive laugh.
“Mark, you’re seriously overreacting,” she said again, but her voice didn’t carry the same confidence anymore.

Mark didn’t look at her.

He kept his eyes on his wife.

She stood frozen by the stove, like she wasn’t sure if she was allowed to stop moving yet. Tears still clung to her cheeks, and her grip on the baby tightened as if letting go would cause everything to collapse completely.

Mark took one step forward.

Then another.

His voice was low, steady, controlled—but it carried weight that made the air feel heavier.

“Overreacting?” he repeated quietly.

He finally turned his head toward the guests.

“This is what you call normal?”

Neither woman answered.

The silence that followed wasn’t empty anymore. It was uncomfortable. Exposed.

Mark exhaled slowly, then pointed toward the door without raising his voice.

“You’re done here. Both of you.”

The words landed hard.

The woman on the couch scoffed again, but it was weaker this time. “You can’t just—”

“I already did,” Mark cut in.

And for the first time, no one argued back immediately.

Because something about the way he said it made them realize he wasn’t asking.
