CHAPTER 3 — WHEN HE FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

Nathan found her three days later.
Not through luck.
Not through access.
Through desperation.
He waited outside the only gate still marked with her family name—one he had never bothered to research before.
Security didn’t move.
He shouted her name.
No response.
Hours passed.
His voice broke.
His pride collapsed long before his body did.
Finally, the gate opened.
But only slightly.
A guard stepped out.
“She will not see you,” he said flatly.
Nathan stepped forward.
“I’m her husband.”
A pause.
Then the guard replied:
“No. You were a liability she temporarily tolerated.”
That word hit harder than any financial collapse.
Liability.
Not enemy.
Not rival.
Just… unnecessary.
Nathan’s voice cracked.
“Please. Just tell her I didn’t know. I didn’t understand—”
The gate remained unmoved.
Behind it, he finally saw her.
She stood in the distance.
Still.
Composed.
Watching him like a final page she had already read.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, he saw everything he had never paid attention to.
And she saw nothing left worth saving.
She turned away first.
And walked back inside.
The gate closed.
May you like
Quietly.
Permanently.
