CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE GLASS

Across the city, in a high-rise that did not appear on any public registry, the woman in the wedding gown was no longer a bride.

She stood behind floor-to-ceiling glass, watching the city wake up beneath her.

The room was quiet.

Controlled.

Power did not need noise.

A man in a tailored suit entered silently.

“Chairwoman,” he said. “The Brooks empire has been fully absorbed. Offshore holdings secured. All major investors have shifted under your umbrella.”

She didn’t turn around.

“Losses?” she asked calmly.

“Contained. Minimal disruption.”

A pause.

Then she asked the only question that mattered.

“And Nathan?”

A hesitation.

“He’s… still processing. He’s outside the old headquarters. No access. No support. No accounts.”

For the first time, she exhaled slowly.

Not satisfaction.

Not anger.

Closure.

“Let him understand,” she said softly. “Understanding is worse than pain.”

The man nodded and left.

She finally turned away from the window and walked to a desk where her wedding ring sat inside a glass box.

Next to it: a file labeled BROOKS ACQUISITION — FINALIZED

She closed the box.

Not out of sentiment.

But because it was finished.

And finished things did not need revisiting.
