CHAPTER 2 — The Evidence Behind the Wall

Nobody moved.

The detectives stepped into the dining room with quiet confidence, badges already visible.

One of them looked directly at Julian.

"Julian Moreno?"

He nodded slowly.

"What's this about?"

The detective didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he watched Ofelia kneeling beside the recycling cabinet.

"Ma'am... please step away."

She hesitated.

"I was only looking for—"

"We know exactly what you're looking for."

The forensic investigator slipped on latex gloves.

Within seconds, he reached behind the trash bags.

He pulled out a torn bank envelope.

Inside were mortgage contracts.

Transfer receipts.

Insurance paperwork.

And one document that made Ernesto's jaw tighten.

Valeria's signature.

Perfect.

Too perfect.

Ernesto looked once.

"That's forged."

The investigator nodded.

"The handwriting examiner already agrees."

Julian laughed again.

"You can't prove anything."

The detective calmly replied,

"We already have surveillance footage from the bank."

The smile disappeared.

For the first time that afternoon, Julian looked frightened.

Outside, Valeria stood frozen beneath the old oak tree.

Her father walked toward her.

"I need you to answer one question."

She looked away.

"Did he ever force you to sign anything?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I never signed any of it."

"And the bruises?"

She whispered,

"They weren't the first."

Ernesto closed his eyes.

He had feared that answer.

But hearing it shattered something inside him.

He wrapped his daughter in his arms.

"You never have to go back."

May you like

For the first time in years...

She believed him.
