CHAPTER 1 — The Birthday Confession

CHAPTER 1 — The Birthday Confession

The knife froze halfway through the birthday cake.

Every conversation in the room died instantly.

Even the mariachi band beside the fireplace lowered their instruments, as though they had been waiting for this exact moment.

"My little girl..."

Ernesto Salgado had barely stepped through the front door before his eyes found the bruises hidden beneath his daughter's makeup.

"...who did this to your face?"

Valeria instinctively reached up and touched her left cheek.

The foundation covered most of the purple bruising—but not enough to fool the man who had raised her on his own.

She forced a smile.

"It's nothing, Dad."

Across the kitchen island, her husband lifted a glass of premium tequila.

Julian Moreno laughed.

"It was me."

Every head turned toward him.

"I gave her an early birthday present."

He casually raised one hand.

"A slap instead of flowers."

A few guests let out uneasy laughs.

Someone murmured,

"He's kidding..."

Julian's grin only widened.

"What? Married couples argue."

His mother, Ofelia, pressed two fingers dramatically against her chest.

"Oh, Julian... don't joke like that."

She glanced around the room.

"People always take things the wrong way."

But Ernesto wasn't just "people."

For nearly three decades, he had served as a prosecutor specializing in domestic violence.

He had listened to thousands of abusers.

Thousands of excuses.

Thousands of lies.

And through it all, one thing had never changed.

The guilty always smiled first.

Ernesto didn't look at Julian.

He looked straight into Valeria's eyes.

She said nothing.

She simply gave the faintest nod.

Almost impossible to notice.

Almost too small to be real.

But it was enough.

Ernesto slowly removed his steel wristwatch.

He set it carefully on the hallway table.

Then he spoke with chilling calm.

"Valeria."

His daughter looked as though she might collapse.

"Go wait in the garden."

"Dad..."

"Now."

Julian burst out laughing.

"She's my wife."

He leaned casually against the counter.

"She stays exactly where I tell her."

Only then did Ernesto turn to face him.

His voice dropped to a quiet whisper.

"You just admitted to assaulting my daughter."

Julian's smile faltered.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then he shrugged.

"So what?"

"You made that confession in front of thirteen witnesses."

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

No one laughed anymore.

Outside, Valeria stepped into the warm afternoon sunlight.

Her hands shook so badly she nearly dropped her phone.

From the garden, she watched the birthday party through the glass doors.

Then something unexpected happened.

Ofelia suddenly rushed toward the hallway.

Not to her son.

To the recycling cabinet.

She dropped to her knees.

Frantically digging behind several black trash bags.

Searching for something.

Valeria froze.

She knew exactly what was hidden there.

The torn bank envelope.

The forged mortgage documents.

The papers that could destroy everything.

Before Ofelia could reach them—

The study door swung open.

Two plainclothes detectives walked inside.

Behind them came a forensic investigator.

Then a victim advocate.

Julian's smile disappeared.

Ofelia remained frozen on her knees.

Ernesto had never come alone.

And the birthday party... had never really been a birthday party at all.
