Chapter 5: A Second Chance

Chapter 5: A Second Chance
Nearly a year after Vanessa's conviction, Daniel invited Elena to dinner.
Not as employer and employee.
As two people who had survived the same storm.
"I've been meaning to ask you something," he said.
She smiled nervously.
"What is it?"
"Why didn't you leave?"
"You could have found another job."
Elena looked toward the garden where Daniel's mother sat watching birds.
"My grandmother raised me."
"When she became sick, nobody helped us."
"I promised myself I'd never abandon another elderly person who needed someone."
Daniel understood.
That promise had nearly cost Elena her life.
Instead, it had saved his mother's.
Months later, with Daniel's mother sitting proudly in the front row, they married in a quiet ceremony surrounded by close friends.
There were no extravagant decorations.
No lavish speeches.
Only genuine happiness.
When the officiant pronounced them husband and wife, Daniel looked at Elena and whispered,

"You didn't just save my mother."
"You saved me."
