Chapter 4: Healing

The house felt different after Vanessa was gone.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Daniel converted the downstairs library into a bright bedroom for his mother so she would never need stairs again.

Physical therapy slowly strengthened her body.

Some mornings she could walk a few steps with a cane.

Other mornings she simply enjoyed sitting in the garden, watching the flowers bloom.

Daniel remained by her side whenever work allowed.

Elena tried to resign.

"I think my job here is finished," she said softly.

Daniel shook his head.

"You never worked for us."

"You protected my family."

His mother reached for Elena's hand.

"You already are family."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

She stayed.

Months passed.

The laughter slowly returned to the house.

Daniel noticed the little things first.

The way Elena always made his mother's favorite tea before asking what she wanted.

The way she smiled only after everyone else had eaten.

The way she never sought praise for anything she did.

One evening, Daniel found an old envelope in his mother's dresser.

Inside was a handwritten note.

"If anything ever happens to me," his mother had written months earlier, "trust Elena. She has the kindest heart I've ever known."

Daniel quietly folded the letter.

His mother had seen the truth long before he had.
