Chapter 2 – The Knock at the Door

Chapter 2 – The Knock at the Door
The doorbell never rang.
The front door opened before anyone inside had the chance to react.
Three military police officers entered first, followed by two Child Protective Services investigators and my attorney, Daniel Carter. Behind them came two county sheriff's deputies carrying body cameras.
The room fell silent.
My mother stared in disbelief.
"What is this?" Eleanor demanded.
One of the military officers stepped forward.
"Captain Lucas Bennett?"
"Present."
"We're here at your request."
Daniel calmly handed Eleanor a thick folder.
"This is a court-authorized emergency protection order."
She frowned.
"What protection order?"
"One protecting Mrs. Sophia Bennett and her minor child."
Audrey laughed nervously.
"This is ridiculous."
One of the CPS investigators walked straight toward Sophia.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
Sophia nodded weakly.
"We're here to help you."
The investigator carefully photographed every bruise on Sophia's arms, face, and shoulders.
Another worker checked Leo's temperature.
His expression changed immediately.
"This baby needs emergency medical treatment."
"I told you it wasn't serious!" Eleanor snapped.
The CPS investigator didn't even look at her.
"A one-hundred-four-degree fever in a newborn is a medical emergency."
My attorney opened another folder.
"We've also submitted financial evidence showing Mrs. Eleanor Bennett withdrew over two hundred thousand dollars from Captain Bennett's deployment account using forged authorization."
Eleanor's face turned white.
"I was protecting his money!"
Daniel slid several bank statements onto the dining table.
"Your signatures don't match."
Another document followed.
"And these surveillance screenshots show you entering the bank alone."
Audrey slowly backed away.
"I had nothing to do with that."
Before anyone could answer, another deputy carried in several evidence boxes.
Inside were nursery camera hard drives.
Printed emails.
Medical records.
Voice recordings.
Every lie my mother had told over the past eight months was sitting neatly labeled inside those boxes.
The lead military investigator looked toward Eleanor.
"Mrs. Bennett, we'd like to ask you several questions."
She folded her arms.
"I don't have to answer anything."
"You don't."
He nodded politely.
"But everything you say from this point forward is being recorded."

For the first time that evening...
She stopped talking.
