Chapter 2 – The Truth Hidden in Plain Sight
The emergency room was filled with tense silence.
Doctors rushed Claire into surgery for emergency monitoring while Ethan paced outside.
After nearly an hour, the attending physician finally emerged.
"Your wife is stable."
Ethan nearly collapsed with relief.
"The baby is alive, but the impact caused partial placental separation. She'll remain under observation for several days."
"Can I see her?"
The doctor nodded.
Inside the room, Claire reached for Ethan's hand.
"I didn't fall."
"I know."
"Vanessa pushed me."
"I know."
Claire looked surprised.
Ethan pulled out his phone.
"One of your cousins sent me something."
He played a security video.
It clearly showed Vanessa glancing around before charging directly into Claire's back.
There was no stumble.
No accident.
Just a deliberate shove.
Claire burst into tears.
"My own sister..."
Ethan squeezed her hand.
"No."
He corrected softly.
"Not your sister anymore."
Meanwhile, Detective Laura Bennett reviewed the footage downtown.
"This wasn't negligence," she said.
"It appears intentional."
An officer looked up.
"Should we bring Vanessa in?"
Laura nodded.
"And the mother."
That evening, officers arrived at Eleanor's estate.
Vanessa opened the door with a forced smile.
"What is this about?"
Detective Bennett showed her the warrant.

"We'd like to discuss the assault of Claire Morgan."
Vanessa's confidence disappeared.
