Chapter 1 – The Call That Changed Everything

Claire's fingers trembled as she pressed the call button. Every breath sent another wave of pain through her stomach. She wrapped one arm around her swollen belly, whispering, "Please stay with me."

Across the dining room, no one moved.

Her younger sister, Vanessa, stood frozen beside the staircase. The panic on her face lasted only a second before it hardened into fake concern.

"I barely touched her," Vanessa said quickly. "She lost her balance."

Their mother, Eleanor, nodded immediately.

"Exactly. Claire has always been dramatic."

Several relatives exchanged uneasy glances, but years of watching Eleanor favor Vanessa had taught them one thing—staying silent was easier.

Then Claire's phone connected.

"Ethan..."

Her voice cracked.

"Come get me... and the baby."

The line went quiet for only two seconds.

"I'm already on my way," Ethan answered.

He didn't ask questions.

He didn't hesitate.

"I called 911. Don't move."

Claire finally allowed herself to cry.

Ten minutes later, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the front of the mansion.

But it wasn't just an ambulance that arrived.

Three police cruisers pulled in behind it.

A black SUV stopped next.

Ethan jumped out before the vehicle had fully halted.

The moment he saw Claire lying on the marble floor, something inside him broke.

He knelt beside her.

"Baby... look at me."

Claire managed a weak smile.

"They said... I should apologize."

Ethan slowly looked toward Eleanor and Vanessa.

Neither woman had ever seen that expression on his face.

Pure rage.

"What happened?"

Before Claire could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.

"It was an accident."

Ethan ignored her completely.

The paramedics carefully lifted Claire onto a stretcher.

One of them frowned after examining her.

"We're transporting her immediately. Possible placental trauma."

Ethan climbed into the ambulance.

Before the doors closed, he looked directly at Eleanor.

"If anything happens to my wife or my son..."

His voice remained frighteningly calm.

"...I'll make sure the truth reaches everyone."

The ambulance sped away.

The police remained.

And for the first time in years, Eleanor realized this wasn't another family argument.

This was becoming a criminal investigation.
