Chapter 8 - The Shot Below the Music.

The gunshot silenced the mansion more completely than the power outage had.

Even the guests in the ballroom understood what it meant.

Claire heard the difference immediately.

Before the shot, people had been frightened and impatient.

After it, nobody complained about locked doors.

The most powerful people in the room suddenly listened to security guards they might not have noticed an hour earlier.

A senator crouched behind a banquet table.

A billionaire hotel owner held the hand of a young server who was crying quietly.

Two board members helped an elderly donor sit on the floor away from the windows.

Fear flattened status faster than any speech about equality ever could.

William looked through the ballroom doorway and saw the same thing.

"Get everyone away from the walls," he ordered.

Marcus repeated the instruction through the room.

Claire guided Ethan behind the library desk.

"Is someone hurt?" he asked.

"We don't know."

"Was that a gun?"

Claire hesitated.

William answered before she could.

"Yes."

Ethan stared at him.

William kept his voice level.

"The police are handling it."

"Are you scared?"

William nodded.

"Yes."

Claire looked at him.

It would have been easier to say no.

It would also have been another lie told to make a child easier to manage.

Ethan nodded as if his father's answer made sense.

"Me too."

William touched his shoulder.

"Then we stay together while we're scared."

Even the guests in the ballroom understood what it meant.

Claire heard someone begin to pray behind the closed doors.

William pulled Ethan down behind the heavy library desk.

The officer pushed Isabella against the wall and cuffed her before she could move.

"I didn't do that," she said.

Nobody answered.

Nora's voice exploded over the radio.

"Officer down."

William's face tightened.

"Nora?"

Static.

"Detective Hayes?"

Nothing.

Claire wrapped both arms around Ethan.

"Stay low."

The boy nodded against her shoulder.

William looked toward the hidden passages as if he could see through the walls.

"Marcus."

He keyed the radio.

"Lock every interior stair."

Marcus answered immediately.

"Already done."

"Where's Adrian?"

Silence.

Then Marcus's voice changed.

"Breakfast room is empty."

William closed his eyes.

"How?"

"Officer at the door was pulled to the ballroom when the lights went out."

Isabella laughed once.

It sounded almost hysterical.

"I told you."

William looked at her.

"This does not make you innocent."

"It means Adrian is trying to clean up."

"Clean up what?"

"Us."

William stared.

Isabella lowered her voice.

"Peter."

"He is with police."

"Adrian doesn't know that."

"You."

She nodded.

"And Ethan."

Claire felt the boy tense.

William's face became frighteningly calm.

"Nobody is touching my son."

The emergency lights flickered.

Then Nora's voice returned.

"William, we're okay."

Everyone exhaled at once.

"What happened?"

"A shot hit the ceiling."

"Who fired?"

"We don't know."

"You don't know?"

"There was a second passage."

William looked at Isabella.

She shook her head.

Nora continued.

"Someone entered the cellar from the north side, fired once, and ran."

"Adrian."

"Maybe."

"What did he take?"

"The surveillance receiver."

William swore under his breath.

"Anything else?"

"A hard drive is missing."

Claire understood before William said it.

"Evidence."

Nora answered.

"Yes."

William looked at Isabella.

"Where does the north passage go?"

"I don't know."

"Wrong answer."

"I don't."

"You hired the architect."

"Peter designed modifications Adrian requested."

"Where does it go?"

Isabella's eyes moved toward the ceiling.

"Maybe the old greenhouse."

Marcus answered over the radio.

"Greenhouse team moving now."

William crouched beside Ethan.

"I'm going to take you upstairs with Claire."

Ethan's eyes widened.

"No."

"The guest suite is secure."

"No walls."

William stopped.

Claire understood.

"He doesn't want another hidden room."

William looked devastated.

"Okay."

He thought.

"Then we stay in the center hall."

"With people?"

"With people."

They moved Ethan into the grand central hall where police had created a secure area away from the ballroom.

Claire sat beside him on the lower stair.

A paramedic brought water and a blanket.

William stood ten feet away speaking with Nora when she returned from the cellar.

Her coat was dusty.

There was a torn seam at one shoulder.

"The officer is fine," she said.

"The bullet missed by several feet."

"Adrian?"

"Not confirmed."

"Who else would it be?"

"I don't build cases by choosing the answer first."

William nodded.

"Fair."

Nora held up a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was a torn piece of black fabric.

"This caught on a nail in the passage."

William looked at it.

"Tuxedo wool."

"Probably."

"Half the men downstairs are wearing tuxedos."

"Exactly."

Nora glanced at Isabella, who now sat cuffed under police watch.

"She says Adrian planned to take Ethan to Montreal."

"Do you believe her?"

"I believe the tickets exist."

"That's not what I asked."

"I know."

Nora lowered her voice.

"People start telling partial truths when their full lie becomes too expensive."

William looked at his wife.

"So she might be telling enough truth to save herself."

"Yes."

"And hiding the rest."

"Probably."

Claire heard Ethan whisper.

"Miss Claire?"

"Yes?"

"Can I tell you something without Dad getting mad?"

"Your dad is not mad at you."

"But can I tell you first?"

Claire nodded.

"Of course."

Ethan stared at his water bottle.

"I took something."

"From where?"

"The wall room."

"What?"

He reached inside the pocket of the clean sweatpants someone had brought from his bedroom.

For a second, Claire did not understand how anything from the hidden room could be in clothes he changed into afterward.

Then Ethan pulled out a tiny red plastic dinosaur.

"That's yours?"

He nodded.

"I hid it in my sock."

"Why?"

"Mom gave it to me."

Claire smiled softly.

"Then I'm glad you kept it."

"There's paper inside."

Claire's smile disappeared.

"What paper?"

Ethan turned the toy over.

The dinosaur's hollow belly had been sealed with a small piece of tape.

"I put it there when Isabella came in."

"What did you put there?"

"A note."

Claire looked toward William.

"What note?"

"The one Mr. Vale dropped."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"When?"

"The first night."

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

"I forgot."

He looked ashamed.

"Everything got mixed up."

"You have nothing to be ashamed of."

Claire peeled back the tape carefully.

A tightly folded strip of paper slid into her palm.

She did not open it.

"We give this to Detective Hayes."

Ethan nodded.

Claire called Nora over.

The detective put on gloves before accepting the toy and paper.

"Where did this come from?"

Ethan explained.

Nora unfolded the note on a clean evidence pad.

It was not handwritten.

It looked like part of a printed email.

Only six lines remained.

Nora read them silently.

Her expression changed.

William stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Nora turned the paper so he could see.

The fragment contained a list of times and locations.

6:30 - WEST CORRIDOR CAMERA OFF.

6:45 - E MOVED TO HOLD.

9:10 - SIGNATURE COMPLETE.

9:20 - RELEASE PACKAGE TO COUNSEL.

9:40 - MOVE E THROUGH NORTH ROUTE.

10:15 - CAR TWO TO AIRFIELD.

William stared.

"Airfield."

Nora nodded.

"Not the airport."

"Private flight."

"Looks that way."

At the bottom was one partial line.

COUNSEL CONFIRMS JUDGE READY FOR 11:00.

William looked at Nora.

"A judge?"

"Emergency guardianship petitions can be handled quickly under certain circumstances."

"At eleven at night?"

"With the right story and the right emergency filing, maybe."

"Who is counsel?"

Nora looked at the torn edge.

"The name is missing."

Isabella spoke from across the hall.

"I know."

Everyone turned.

Nora walked toward her.

"Who?"

Isabella swallowed.

"Daniel Mercer."

William's expression changed.

"My family attorney?"

"Your former family attorney."

"He retired."

"No."

Isabella looked exhausted.

"Adrian paid him to stay quiet."

William stared at her.

"About Lauren's trust?"

"About everything."

Nora crouched in front of Isabella.

"Where is Mercer tonight?"

"I don't know."

"Think harder."

Isabella looked toward the ballroom.

"He was invited."

William's face went cold.

"Under what name?"

"He didn't need a false name."

"He's on the guest list?"

Isabella nodded.

Marcus grabbed a tablet and searched.

His face changed.

"Daniel Mercer checked in at 7:03."

Nora stood.

"Is he still in the ballroom?"

Marcus spoke into his radio.

Seconds passed.

Then a guard answered.

"Negative."

Nora's eyes narrowed.

"Did he leave?"

"No recorded exit."

William looked toward the old walls.

"Then he's inside the house."

A voice sounded from the landing above them.

"Yes, I am."

Everyone looked up.

An older man in a black tuxedo stood at the top of the stairs.

One hand gripped the banister.

The other held the blue star-covered box Ethan had described.

William whispered his name.

"Daniel."

May you like

The old attorney looked down at him.

"Lauren told me this night would come.
