Chapter 3 - The Blue Folder.

The library doors closed behind William, Isabella, Adrian Vale, Claire, Ethan, and two security officers.

Outside, the gala had turned into a room full of trapped rumors.

Inside, the old library felt smaller than Claire remembered.

Floor-to-ceiling shelves lined three walls.

A fire burned beneath a carved stone mantel.

Lauren Sterling's portrait hung above William's desk.

The late Mrs. Sterling had a calm face and direct gray eyes.

Claire noticed Isabella never looked at the portrait.

Adrian Vale stood near the center of the room with his tuxedo jacket open and his hands visible.

He was in his early forties, clean-cut, controlled, and usually charming.

Tonight, there was mud on one polished shoe.

A security guard placed the second gold key on the desk.

William set Isabella's key beside it.

They were nearly identical.

"Where is the blue folder?"

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"William, I have no idea what you're talking about."

Ethan's fingers tightened around Claire's hand.

"He had it."

Adrian looked at the boy.

"Ethan, you must be confused."

Claire moved slightly in front of him.

William saw it.

"Do not speak to my son."

Adrian's eyes returned to William.

"Fine."

"Where is the folder?"

"I don't have one."

"Search him."

Adrian gave a humorless laugh.

"You cannot be serious."

"Search him."

The security officer stepped forward.

Adrian raised both hands.

"This is insane."

The officer checked his jacket, pockets, waistband, and trouser pockets.

No folder.

He found a phone, a wallet, two business cards, and a brass token from the coat check.

William picked up the phone.

"Unlock it."

Adrian's face hardened.

"No."

"Then the police can do it when they arrive."

"You are making a catastrophic mistake."

"I've already made one."

William glanced at Isabella.

"I trusted both of you."

Isabella finally spoke.

"Stop performing for the staff."

Claire almost looked around to see which staff member she meant.

Then she realized Isabella meant her.

William did not blink.

"Claire found my son."

"Claire broke into a secured part of the house."

"A secured part of the house where you kept him."

"That is not what happened."

"Then explain what happened."

Isabella folded her hands at her waist.

"Ethan has been having episodes."

William's face tightened.

"What episodes?"

"Night terrors."

"He hasn't had a night terror in two years."

"You travel constantly."

"His pediatrician would know."

"Not everything needs a doctor."

"Locking him in a wall does?"

Adrian stepped in.

"William, this conversation is becoming emotional."

William turned on him.

"My seven-year-old son was found barefoot in a hidden room, and you are telling me to be less emotional."

Adrian went quiet.

A knock came at the door.

Marcus, the head of security, entered with a tablet.

"Police are at the front gate."

"Let them in."

"Already done."

Marcus looked at Isabella and Adrian.

"I also pulled the surveillance access log."

William held out his hand.

Marcus gave him the tablet.

"The west corridor camera was disabled at 6:42 p.m."

"By whom?"

"The system lists an administrator override."

"Whose administrator code?"

Marcus hesitated.

"Mine."

The room shifted.

William stared at him.

Marcus held up both hands.

"I didn't do it."

"Who has your code?"

"No one should."

Adrian looked toward the fire.

Claire saw it.

So did Marcus.

"Mr. Vale?"

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I don't know anything about security codes."

Marcus stepped closer.

"You asked me about camera blind spots last month."

"For an insurance audit."

"There was no insurance audit."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"You don't know that."

"I checked."

William set the tablet down.

"Marcus, did Isabella ever ask about hidden passages?"

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Yes."

Isabella's head turned sharply.

"When?"

"During the renovation six months ago."

"That was about fire access."

Marcus continued.

"She specifically asked whether the old service cavities appeared on modern floor plans."

William looked at her.

"And do they?"

"No," Marcus said.

The library door opened again.

Two uniformed officers entered with a woman in a dark coat.

She showed William her badge.

"Detective Nora Hayes."

Her eyes moved quickly around the room.

"I understand a child was found in a concealed space."

William nodded.

"My son."

Nora's expression softened when she saw Ethan.

"Is he injured?"

"I don't know yet."

"An ambulance is outside."

William crouched beside Ethan.

"We're going to have a doctor check you."

Ethan grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't let Isabella come."

William looked up at his wife.

Something in his face closed permanently.

"She won't."

Isabella laughed once, softly and without humor.

"You are letting a frightened child dictate reality."

Nora turned toward her.

"Mrs. Sterling, I need you to stop speaking about the child for a moment."

Isabella stared at the detective.

"This is my home."

"And this is my investigation."

The words landed cleanly.

Claire almost admired the silence that followed.

Nora knelt so she was at Ethan's level.

"Hi, Ethan."

He stayed close to Claire.

"I'm Nora."

No answer.

"You don't have to tell me anything right now."

Ethan glanced up.

"Really?"

"Really."

That seemed to matter.

Nora stood and looked at Claire.

"You found him?"

"Yes."

"I need your account separately."

"Of course."

"And I need the hallway preserved."

Marcus nodded.

"Already sealed."

Nora pointed toward the two keys.

"Nobody touches those."

William stepped away from the desk.

"Detective, Ethan said Mr. Vale had a blue folder before he was locked away."

Nora looked at Adrian.

"Did you?"

"No."

"He also said the folder involved guardianship."

Adrian's face remained still, but Claire saw his throat move.

Nora noticed too.

"Mr. Vale, are you an attorney?"

"No."

"Then why would a child associate you with guardianship papers?"

"I have no idea."

Nora turned to Isabella.

"Do you?"

"No."

Ethan spoke from behind Claire.

"It had Dad's name on the front."

Nora looked back at him.

"The folder?"

He nodded.

"And a silver circle."

William went rigid.

Claire had no idea what that meant.

Adrian did.

His face lost color.

William walked slowly to the desk.

He opened the bottom drawer and removed a black leather portfolio embossed with a silver circular seal.

"This seal?"

Ethan stared.

"Yes."

Nora looked at William.

"What is it?"

"Sterling Family Trust."

Claire saw Isabella's shoulders tense.

William opened the portfolio.

"Only family trust documents carry that seal."

Nora's eyes sharpened.

"Who prepares those documents?"

William looked directly at Adrian.

"Our private counsel and our CFO."

Adrian shook his head.

"That's misleading."

"Is it?"

"I administer financial schedules."

"Including Lauren's trust?"

Adrian's silence answered before his mouth did.

William's voice fell.

"What did Lauren leave Ethan?"

Adrian looked toward Isabella.

It was quick.

Too quick.

Nora saw it.

William saw it.

Claire saw it.

"Answer me."

Adrian rubbed a hand over his jaw.

"William, this is not the place."

"What did my wife leave my son?"

Adrian finally spoke.

"A controlling interest trigger."

The phrase meant nothing to Claire.

It meant everything to William.

He moved away from the desk and stared at the fire as though the flames had suddenly become easier to understand than his own finances.

"A controlling interest trigger," he repeated.

Nora waited.

"In normal English."

William rubbed the back of his neck.

"Lauren's family contributed the medical patents and early capital that made Sterling Medical what it is."

He looked at Ethan.

"Her shares were always different from mine."

Adrian spoke carefully.

"They carried enhanced voting rights under the original charter."

William turned on him.

"I know what they carried."

Adrian went quiet.

William continued for Nora.

"If Ethan's trust controls those shares independently, my vote no longer decides the company."

"Is that bad?" Ethan asked.

William looked at his son.

The question cut through every adult assumption in the room.

"Not necessarily."

"Then why is everyone scared?"

William sat beside him.

"Because some people wanted to control something that belongs to you."

"The company?"

"Part of it."

"Do I have to run it?"

Despite everything, Claire almost smiled.

William did too.

"No."

"Good."

Ethan leaned against Claire.

"I want to study dinosaurs."

William nodded solemnly.

"A much safer industry."

Nora let the moment breathe before returning to Adrian.

"So if Isabella became guardian, she could exercise Ethan's voting rights?"

Adrian answered reluctantly.

"Temporarily, depending on the order."

"And combined with her marital proxy?"

William's eyes hardened.

"Enough to remove me as chairman."

Nora wrote that down.

The motive now had a number, a mechanism, and a deadline.

It was no longer the vague greed Claire associated with television scandals.

It was a legal structure someone had tried to bend around a frightened child.

It meant everything to William.

He sat down slowly.

"No."

Nora looked between them.

"Explain."

William stared at Lauren's portrait.

"Lauren's father founded the original Sterling medical division."

His voice sounded far away.

"When she died, I was told her shares transferred into the general family trust until Ethan turned twenty-five."

Adrian said nothing.

"That wasn't true, was it?"

Adrian closed his eyes.

William stood again.

"Was it?"

"There was an amendment."

"What amendment?"

"Lauren signed it shortly before she died."

William's face went blank.

"And you never told me."

Adrian's answer was almost a whisper.

"I was instructed not to disclose it unless certain conditions occurred."

"What conditions?"

Adrian looked at Ethan.

Then at Isabella.

Then at the gold keys on the desk.

"If William remarried."

No one spoke.

Nora leaned forward.

"And what happens under that condition?"

Adrian swallowed.

"Ethan's shares move out of William's control."

William's eyes narrowed.

"Into whose?"

Adrian looked at him.

"Ethan's legal guardian."

Claire felt Ethan's fingers close around hers.

William looked at Isabella.

The blue folder no longer sounded like paperwork.

It sounded like a weapon.

Then Marcus's radio crackled from his belt.

"Sir, we found the folder."

Everyone turned.

Marcus lifted the radio.

"Where?"

The answer came through static.

"In Mrs. Sterling's car."

May you like

Isabella's face finally broke.

And Nora Hayes reached for her handcuffs.
