Chapter 7 - Beneath the Ballroom.

Emergency lights flickered on three seconds after the chandeliers died.
Three seconds was long enough to turn a sophisticated charity gala into panic.
Guests shouted.
Chairs scraped.
Glass shattered.
Security officers ordered everyone to remain still.
Claire pulled Ethan beneath the kitchen doorway until William reached them.
"Stay together."
He put one arm around his son.
"Dad, is Isabella coming?"
"No."
William looked toward the hall.
"Marcus, where is she?"
The head of security answered over the radio.
"Still in the library with an officer."
"Adrian?"
"Breakfast room."
"Peter?"
"With Detective Hayes."
William frowned.
"Then who killed the lights?"
Marcus's radio crackled.
"Generator is active."
"Why aren't the main lights returning?"
"Manual cut at the basement panel."
Nora appeared with two officers.
"Nobody touches that panel until we clear the lower level."
William pointed toward the old plan.
"The receiver is under the ballroom."
"I know."
"I'm coming."
"You are staying with Ethan."
"Detective—"
"Someone just cut power inside your house while police are here."
Nora's tone left no room for debate.
"Your son has already been hidden once tonight."
William looked at Ethan.
That ended the argument.
"Fine."
Nora turned to Claire.
"Take them to the library corridor."
Claire nodded.
"The library has officers."
"Exactly."
They moved through the emergency-lit hallway.
The mansion looked unfamiliar in red safety light.
Claire had never realized how much wealth depended on illumination.
Without the chandeliers, the marble lost its warmth and the gilded frames looked dull and heavy.
The mansion became what it had been before decorators, florists, and donors arrived: old stone, narrow corridors, locked doors, and shadows.
Ethan watched every doorway.
"The wall room was darker than this," he whispered.
William tightened his grip on the boy's hand.
"You never have to go back there."
"What if there are more?"
William stopped walking.
Claire saw the question hit him.
He had promised safety inside a house whose architecture he no longer understood.
"Then we find every one," William said.
"Every hidden room?"
"Every one."
Marcus heard him over the radio.
"I can have a structural team here by morning."
William answered without hesitation.
"Tonight."
"Sir, with police processing the property—"
"As soon as they clear an area, I want every wall mapped."
Nora's voice came over another channel.
"That can wait until evidence is preserved."
William exhaled.
"Fine."
Ethan looked at Claire.
"How do they find rooms in walls?"
"Probably with very expensive machines," Claire said.
"Can the machines find dinosaurs?"
"Only if the dinosaurs forgot to pay rent."
He smiled briefly.
William looked at Claire with gratitude that needed no words.
She understood what he was grateful for.
Not humor itself.
Normality.
One small exchange that did not involve trusts, keys, lies, or police.
Then a scream echoed from the ballroom and the moment vanished.
Paintings became dark shapes.
Open doors looked like holes.
Ethan kept one hand in William's and one in Claire's.
When they reached the library, Isabella was no longer inside.
The officer assigned to her sat against the wall holding a cloth to his forehead.
William stopped dead.
"Where is she?"
The officer looked furious with himself.
"She said she felt faint."
"And?"
"I turned to get water."
"She hit you?"
"With the brass bookend."
William's jaw clenched.
"How long ago?"
"Maybe ninety seconds."
Claire looked at Ethan.
The boy had gone very still.
"She'll come for me."
William knelt in front of him.
"No, she won't."
"She said she always finishes what she starts."
William's face changed.
"When did she say that?"
"When I wouldn't read the paper right."
Claire felt William's fear now.
Not anger.
Fear.
He stood and grabbed a radio.
"All security, Isabella is moving inside the house."
Marcus answered.
"Copy."
"Protect the north stair, kitchen, and every route to Ethan."
"Already moving."
Claire looked toward the servants' corridor.
"What about the passage behind the walls?"
William and the officer both turned.
The thought had not occurred to them.
William pressed the radio again.
"Marcus, she has access to hidden passages."
Static.
Then Marcus answered.
"Understood."
A sound came from inside the library.
A soft scrape.
Ethan gripped Claire's hand.
William raised his head.
The officer stepped in front of them.
Another scrape.
It came from behind Lauren's portrait.
William stared at the painting.
"There isn't a passage there."
Claire thought of every sentence spoken that night.
Nobody really knew where the passages were.
The officer approached the portrait cautiously.
He pulled it away from the wall.
Nothing.
Just paneling.
Then a woman's voice came from the hallway behind them.
"William."
They turned.
Isabella stood twenty feet away.
She had removed her heels.
Her gown was torn slightly at one side.
Her hair was no longer perfect.
For the first time, she looked like a person trapped inside her own plan.
William moved in front of Ethan.
"Stay there."
Isabella lifted empty hands.
"I came to talk."
"You knocked out a police officer."
"He grabbed me."
"He says you hit him from behind."
"He's lying."
William laughed in disbelief.
"Everyone is lying except you."
"You don't understand what Adrian has done."
At the sound of his name, William went still.
"What has Adrian done?"
"He used me."
Claire saw something change in William's eyes.
He did not believe her.
But he wanted to hear her.
"Keep talking."
Isabella took one small step forward.
The officer raised a hand.
"Stop."
She stopped.
"Adrian told me Lauren's trust would destroy us."
William's voice dropped.
"Destroy who?"
"You."
"No."
Isabella's eyes flashed.
"You think I wanted your company?"
"Yes."
"I wanted to protect this family."
Ethan's voice came from behind William.
"You put me in the wall."
Isabella closed her eyes.
"Ethan, I made mistakes."
"Do not speak to him," William said.
"William, listen to me."
"I'm listening."
"Adrian said if the trust activated, you would lose control of Sterling Medical."
"That was Lauren's decision."
"She made it years ago when she was sick and angry."
"She was dying."
"Exactly."
William stared at her.
"You don't get to rewrite her last decisions because they inconvenience you."
Isabella's face hardened.
"Adrian said the board would force you out."
"So you kidnapped my son?"
"I never called it that."
Claire felt disgust twist through her.
"What did you call it?"
Isabella looked at her.
"A controlled separation."
Claire almost could not speak.
"He was locked in a windowless room."
"He was fed."
William flinched as if she had struck him.
"Stop talking."
Isabella's voice rose slightly.
"No, because you need to understand that Adrian changed the plan."
William stared.
"How?"
"Ethan was never supposed to stay there for days."
Claire looked at the boy.
He had been in the room long enough to lose track of time.
"How long?"
William asked.
Isabella swallowed.
"A few hours."
"He says he was there for days."
"Because Adrian delayed the paperwork."
"So you left him there."
"I checked on him."
"You lied to me every night."
"You were busy."
William's hands curled into fists at his sides.
"Where did you tell me he was?"
"Your sister's house."
"My sister is in London."
Isabella's face shifted.
Claire saw William understand something else.
"You knew I wouldn't call because you told me she asked for space after her divorce."
"William—"
"You built every lie around something I was too polite to challenge."
Isabella's eyes filled with frustrated tears.
They did not move William.
"Adrian was going to take Ethan tonight."
The words stopped everyone.
William spoke slowly.
"Take him where?"
"I don't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"He stopped telling me things two days ago."
"Why?"
"Because I told him I wanted out."
"Then why were you holding the key?"
Isabella looked at the floor.
"Because I was going to let Ethan out after the speech."
Claire stared at her.
"After William signed the papers."
Isabella did not answer.
That was answer enough.
A burst of static came from the officer's radio.
Nora's voice cut through.
"We found the cellar."
William grabbed the radio.
"What's inside?"
There was a pause.
"A surveillance station."
"Anything else?"
Another pause.
"A packed suitcase for Ethan."
William's face went white.
"Where was he supposed to go?"
Nora's response came quietly.
"There's an airline ticket in the suitcase."
"To where?"
"Montreal."
Isabella shook her head.
"No."
William looked at her.
"You didn't know?"
"No."
Nora continued over the radio.
"The ticket is one-way."
"Whose name?"
"Ethan Sterling."
A second voice spoke in the background.
Then Nora returned.
"William, there's also a second ticket."
"For Adrian?"
"No."
Nora's voice became very still.
"For Isabella Sterling."
Isabella stared at the radio.
Her face drained of color.
May you like
"That's impossible."
Then a gunshot cracked from beneath the ballroom floor.
