Chapter 7: The Missing Millions

The morning after the threatening message arrived, the Harrington Estate felt different.
The mansion had always been large.
Always quiet.
Always protected.
But now the silence felt heavier.
Every hallway carried the same question.
Who had been hiding the truth for twenty-two years?
And how far would they go to keep it buried?
Elizabeth stood in the private study, staring out at the garden.
The same garden where she had once imagined watching Grace run through the grass.
For years, she had pictured a future stolen from her.
Birthday parties.
School graduations.
Family dinners.
A daughter walking beside her on warm summer evenings.
Now Grace was standing in front of her again.
But the joy was mixed with fear.
Someone had threatened to take Lily away.
Again.
Elizabeth tightened her grip on the note.
"Stop searching, or the girl disappears again."
She folded it carefully.
"No."
Her voice was firm.
"They don't get to decide our ending."
Richard entered the room carrying a stack of documents.
"I found something."
Elizabeth turned.
"Another secret?"
He nodded.
"I'm afraid so."
Lily followed behind him.
She had barely slept after the threat.
But she refused to leave.
This was her life.
Her past.
Her truth.
Richard placed the documents on the desk.
"These are financial records from Harrington Industries twenty-two years ago."
Elizabeth frowned.
"Why would company records be connected to Grace's disappearance?"
"Because someone made a fortune after she vanished."
He pointed to a series of transactions.
"Three months after Grace disappeared, a large amount of money was transferred from a private Harrington account."
"How much?"
Richard looked directly at her.
"Ten million dollars."
The room went silent.
Lily looked confused.
"Ten million?"
Richard nodded.
"And the account belonged to your family."
Elizabeth stared at the documents.
"I never approved that."
"I know."
"Who had access?"
Richard hesitated.
"Several people."
"Who?"
"Your father."
"Your husband."
"And your brother, Andrew."
Elizabeth's face changed.
Andrew.
The photograph from the hospital flashed through her mind.
Her own brother standing near the place where her daughter vanished.
"No."
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Andrew wouldn't..."
Richard didn't interrupt.
Because he knew.
Sometimes the hardest truth was the one involving family.
At that moment, Elizabeth's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
The name surprised her.
Andrew Harrington.
Everyone in the room became quiet.
Elizabeth answered.
"Andrew."
Her brother's voice sounded calm.
"Elizabeth."
"Why are you calling?"
A pause.
"I heard about the girl."
Lily looked away.
The words hurt.
Not "your daughter."
The girl.
"Her name is Lily."
Another pause.
"Of course."
Elizabeth's expression hardened.
"Where are you?"
"I'd like to talk."
"About what?"
"About the past."
Richard immediately shook his head.
But Elizabeth continued listening.
"Andrew..."
Her voice became colder.
"Were you at St. Matthew's Hospital the day Grace disappeared?"
Silence.
Long enough to become an answer.
Finally, Andrew spoke.
"Who told you that?"
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
"That's not an answer."
"No."
His voice changed.
"Elizabeth, you don't understand what happened."
"Then explain."
"I can't do this over the phone."
"Where are you?"
"At my house."
Elizabeth ended the call.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"You cannot go alone."
"I wasn't planning to."
Two hours later, Elizabeth, Lily, Richard, and security arrived at Andrew Harrington's mansion.
Unlike Elizabeth's warm estate, Andrew's home felt cold.
Perfect.
Almost untouched.
A place designed to impress strangers.
Not welcome family.
Andrew opened the door himself.
He looked older than Elizabeth remembered.
Tired.
Defeated.
"Elizabeth."
She didn't hug him.
"Why were you at the hospital?"
Andrew looked at Lily.
For a moment, his expression changed.
Something like guilt crossed his face.
Then it disappeared.
"I knew this day would come."
Richard stepped forward.
"Answer the question."
Andrew sighed.
"I was there because Thomas Langford asked me to come."
Elizabeth froze.
"Thomas?"
Andrew nodded.
"He said there was a problem."
"What problem?"
Andrew looked at Lily.
"Grace."
The room became silent.
Andrew walked toward the fireplace.
"Twenty-two years ago, Thomas was desperate."
"For what?"
"Control."
He laughed bitterly.
"You know Thomas. He wanted everything."
"Your father's company."
"The board."
"The influence."
Richard frowned.
"How does kidnapping a baby help him?"
Andrew looked down.
"Because Charles had changed his will."
Elizabeth's face went pale.
"What?"
Andrew turned.
"Charles planned to leave a large portion of Harrington Industries to Grace."
Nobody spoke.
"The moment Grace became an adult, she would control the family shares."
Lily slowly understood.
"So..."
"Someone wanted her gone."
Andrew nodded.
"Exactly."
Elizabeth stepped closer.
"Did you know?"
Andrew's eyes filled with regret.
"I knew something was wrong."
"That is not an answer."
"I knew Thomas was planning something."
The pain in Elizabeth's face was obvious.
"And you did nothing?"
Andrew looked away.
"I thought he wanted to pressure Charles."
"I thought it was about business."
"I never believed he would take a child."
Elizabeth's voice shook.
"But you saw."
Andrew closed his eyes.
"I saw the woman carrying Grace."
Lily whispered,
"You saw me?"
Andrew nodded.
"I saw the nurse leave."
"Why didn't you stop her?"
The question broke him.
"Because I was a coward."
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Andrew continued.
"Thomas told me everything would be fixed."
"He said Grace would be returned."
"He said no one would get hurt."
Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears.
"And you believed him?"
"No."
Andrew looked at her.
"I believed what I wanted to believe."
Richard placed the photograph on the table.
"Then explain this."
Andrew stared at the image.
His face changed.
"Where did you get this?"
"Someone left it for us."
Andrew picked it up.
His hands shook.
"This picture..."
"What?"
Andrew looked terrified.
"It was taken by Victoria."
Elizabeth frowned.
"Victoria Langford?"
Andrew nodded.
"She wasn't just involved."
"She was the one who planned everything."
Suddenly, a loud noise came from outside.
Security guards rushed toward the window.
A black car sped away from the driveway.
Richard looked outside.
"Someone was listening."
Andrew's expression changed.
"They know I'm talking."
Elizabeth turned.
"Who?"
Andrew whispered:
"The person who has controlled everything from the beginning."
Back at the Harrington Estate that evening, Richard continued investigating the financial records.
Then he discovered something hidden inside the company archives.
A confidential agreement.
Signed twenty-two years ago.
The date shocked him.
It was signed exactly one day before Grace disappeared.
The agreement transferred temporary control of Harrington Industries to one person.
Richard read the name.
His face went pale.
Because it wasn't Thomas Langford.
It wasn't Victoria.
It wasn't Andrew.
It was someone no one suspected.
Elizabeth Harrington.
When Elizabeth saw the document, she stared in disbelief.
"I never signed this."
Richard nodded slowly.
"I know."
"Then someone forged my signature."
Lily looked at the paper.
"Why would someone make it look like you did it?"
Richard looked toward the dark window.
"Because whoever did this..."
"...wanted the world to believe you were part of it."
At that moment, every screen in the mansion turned on.
The television.
The security monitors.
The computers.
All showing the same image.
An old newspaper article.
The headline:
"HARRINGTON HEIRESS MISSING — FAMILY FACES INTERNAL SCANDAL."
Then a message appeared across the screen.
"Ask Elizabeth why she signed away her daughter's future."
Elizabeth stepped back.
Her face turned pale.
Lily looked at her.
For the first time...
A question appeared between them.
May you like
A question planted by someone else.
What really happened twenty-two years ago?
