Chapter 10: The DNA Results

The message on the photograph haunted everyone.

"You are too late."

Four simple words.

But they carried a warning.

Someone was still watching.

Someone still had control.

And someone knew more about the Harrington family than anyone was willing to admit.

The clinic immediately went into lockdown.

Police officers searched every hallway.

Every entrance.

Every security camera.

But whoever had entered was already gone.

They left behind only one thing.

Fear.

Detective Pierce stood near the window, studying the photograph.

"This wasn't meant to hurt anyone."

Richard looked at him.

"Then what was it?"

"A reminder."

"Of what?"

The detective turned toward Elizabeth.

"That whoever did this believes they are still in control."

Elizabeth refused to leave Victoria's room.

Not after twenty-two years of searching.

Not after finally getting answers.

Not when the woman who knew the truth might disappear forever.

Lily sat beside her.

The two women watched Victoria sleep.

For the first time, they looked less like strangers.

More like family.

"I don't know what to feel," Lily whispered.

Elizabeth looked at her.

"About Victoria?"

Lily nodded.

"She was part of the reason I lost my life."

"Yes."

"But she also tried to help me."

Elizabeth was quiet.

"People can make terrible choices and still regret them."

Lily looked at her.

"Do you forgive her?"

Elizabeth thought for a moment.

"I don't know."

She glanced at Victoria.

"But I believe everyone deserves the chance to tell the truth."

Back at the Harrington Estate, Richard continued investigating the photograph Victoria had given them.

The man standing beside newborn Grace remained the biggest mystery.

George Harrington.

Elizabeth's father.

A man who had supposedly died fifteen years earlier.

It made no sense.

Unless...

The official story was wrong.

Again.

Richard opened old family records.

Birth certificates.

Death certificates.

Business documents.

Then he found something strange.

A sealed document from twenty-three years earlier.

The title:

PRIVATE FAMILY MEDICAL RECORDS

Richard opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

Inside were hospital records.

Not from Grace's birth.

From George Harrington.

The date of his death.

The location.

The cause.

Everything matched.

Except one detail.

The signature.

The doctor who signed the death certificate was:

Dr. Samuel Whitmore.

Richard froze.

The same last name.

Clara Whitmore.

The fake nurse connected to Grace's disappearance.

A connection nobody had noticed.

At that moment, Elizabeth entered.

"What did you find?"

Richard slowly turned the papers toward her.

"I think your family has been hiding more than we realized."

She read the name.

"Whitmore."

Her face changed.

"That's impossible."

"I thought so too."

"What does this mean?"

Richard looked serious.

"It means the people involved twenty-two years ago may have been connected long before Grace disappeared."

Before they could continue, Dr. Hannah Brooks arrived.

The DNA laboratory technician.

Elizabeth immediately stood.

"The results?"

Dr. Brooks held a sealed envelope.

Everyone became silent.

Lily's hands started shaking.

Forty-eight hours.

A lifetime of questions.

All inside one envelope.

Dr. Brooks looked at both women.

"I know this is an emotional moment."

"But before I give you the results, I need both of you to understand something."

Elizabeth nodded.

"Anything."

"DNA can confirm biological relationships."

"It cannot explain the years you lost."

"It cannot erase pain."

"But it can tell you the truth."

She opened the envelope.

The room seemed to stop.

Dr. Brooks looked at Lily first.

Then Elizabeth.

"The results confirm..."

She paused.

"That Elizabeth Harrington is your biological mother."

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Then the words everyone had waited twenty-two years to hear:

"Lily Carter is Grace Elizabeth Harrington."

Elizabeth covered her face.

A sound escaped her.

Not quite a laugh.

Not quite a cry.

Something between relief and heartbreak.

Her daughter was alive.

Her daughter had come home.

Lily stared at the report.

Her entire identity changed in one sentence.

She wasn't abandoned.

She wasn't unwanted.

She wasn't a mistake.

She was loved.

Elizabeth slowly approached her.

"Grace..."

Lily looked up.

The name sounded unfamiliar.

But strangely comforting.

"I don't know if I can be her yet."

Elizabeth's eyes filled with tears.

"You don't have to become someone else."

"What?"

"You have always been Lily."

She held her hand.

"And you have always been Grace."

Lily finally broke down.

For the first time in twenty-two years...

She allowed herself to cry.

The moment was interrupted by Richard's phone.

He answered quickly.

"Richard Monroe."

A voice spoke.

His expression changed.

"You're certain?"

Everyone looked at him.

"What happened?"

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

"Victoria disappeared."

Elizabeth froze.

"What?"

"The police officer outside her room was unconscious."

"The security cameras were disabled."

"And Victoria..."

He swallowed.

"She's gone."

The happiness of the moment vanished.

Someone had taken the only person who could explain everything.

Again.

Detective Pierce arrived minutes later.

"We found something."

He handed Richard an evidence bag.

Inside was Victoria's hospital bracelet.

And a handwritten note.

Elizabeth read it aloud.

"You found the daughter."

"Now find the father."

Everyone looked confused.

"The father?"

Lily frowned.

"My father?"

Richard looked at Elizabeth.

"Charles?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice became uncertain.

"George."

That night, Richard returned to the old family archives.

He searched every record connected to George Harrington.

And finally found something hidden.

A second death certificate.

Same name.

Same date.

Different hospital.

Different doctor.

Two official records.

Two different versions of the same man's death.

Richard stared at the documents.

"Someone didn't just hide Grace."

"They hid an entire family history."

Meanwhile, Lily walked through the nursery again.

This time, something felt different.

She wasn't a stranger anymore.

She was standing in a room that had been waiting for her.

She touched the old rocking chair.

Then noticed something underneath.

A small wooden carving.

A heart.

With two initials.

G.H.

She ran her fingers over it.

Suddenly, a memory flashed.

A man's voice.

Warm.

Gentle.

"Daddy will always find you."

Lily stepped back.

Her breathing changed.

A memory.

A real memory.

For the first time.

Elizabeth rushed into the room.

"What happened?"

Lily turned toward her.

"I remembered something."

Elizabeth froze.

"What?"

Lily looked at the wooden heart.

"There was a man."

"Who?"

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

"But he was holding me."

"He said he would always find me."

Elizabeth slowly approached.

"Grace..."

Lily opened her eyes.

"What?"

Elizabeth whispered:

"That sounds like your father."

Before they could say anything else, every phone in the mansion received the same message.

Unknown number.

One image.

A photograph.

Everyone looked.

It was old.

Taken twenty-two years earlier.

A hospital hallway.

A woman carrying a baby.

A man standing beside her.

And beneath the photograph was a message:

"You found Grace."

"Now discover who really lost her."

Elizabeth stared at the image.

Because the man in the photograph...

was not George Harrington.

It was Charles Harrington.

Alive.

May you like

Standing in the hospital hallway.

The day Grace disappeared.
