Chapter 1: The Birthmark

The first thing people noticed when they stepped into the Grand Ashford Ballroom wasn't the crystal chandeliers.

It wasn't the orchestra performing beneath a ceiling painted with golden angels.

And it certainly wasn't the rows of priceless floral arrangements flown in from the Netherlands that morning.

It was the woman standing at the center of it all.

Elizabeth Harrington.

At sixty-three years old, she carried herself with the effortless elegance of someone who had spent a lifetime commanding boardrooms, charities, and rooms filled with America's wealthiest families. Her silver evening gown shimmered beneath the lights like flowing moonlight, while a single strand of pearls rested gracefully around her neck.

Tonight marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Harrington Children's Foundation, one of the nation's largest charities dedicated to protecting abandoned and missing children.

More than four hundred guests had gathered inside the historic ballroom.

United States senators.

Fortune 500 CEOs.

Hollywood actors.

Professional athletes.

Television reporters.

Every person in attendance had donated at least one hundred thousand dollars simply for the privilege of sitting in Elizabeth Harrington's presence.

The atmosphere sparkled with laughter, music, and expensive champagne.

No one imagined the evening would end with tears.

Across the room, twenty-two-year-old Lily Carter carefully balanced a silver tray filled with crystal wine glasses.

She had worked double shifts all week.

Rent was overdue.

Her old Honda had broken down two days earlier.

Her foster mother needed medication they could barely afford.

Missing even one night of work wasn't an option.

Lily wasn't supposed to think about the glamorous guests.

She wasn't supposed to notice the designer dresses or diamond watches.

Her job was simple.

Smile.

Serve.

Stay invisible.

She had become very good at being invisible.

"Table Seven needs another bottle of Bordeaux," the banquet manager whispered through his headset.

Lily nodded politely.

"Yes, sir."

She moved gracefully through the crowd despite the heavy tray.

Years of working restaurants had taught her how to avoid conversations, drifting effortlessly between millionaires who never looked twice at the staff serving them.

Or so she thought.

Elizabeth accepted another congratulations from a senator before turning toward the servers.

She always made a point of thanking the staff.

Her father had taught her something long ago.

"The way people treat those who serve them tells you everything about who they really are."

As Lily approached with fresh wine, Elizabeth smiled warmly.

"Thank you, dear."

Lily returned the smile.

"My pleasure, ma'am."

As she reached forward to refill Elizabeth's glass, the sleeve of her uniform slid slightly above her wrist.

Elizabeth froze.

Her smile disappeared.

The crystal glass nearly slipped from her fingers.

On Lily's left wrist...

...was a tiny birthmark.

A perfectly shaped heart.

Barely the size of a dime.

Elizabeth stared without blinking.

Her breathing became uneven.

Impossible.

Her eyes must be deceiving her.

Because she had seen that exact birthmark only once before.

Twenty-two years ago.

On the wrist of a newborn baby girl.

Her daughter.

"Lady Harrington?"

One of the guests noticed her expression.

"Are you feeling alright?"

Elizabeth didn't answer.

She continued staring at Lily's wrist.

The young woman looked confused.

"Ma'am?"

Elizabeth slowly stood.

The orchestra continued playing.

Conversations carried on around them.

No one yet realized anything was wrong.

Elizabeth whispered only two words.

"Your wrist."

Lily instinctively looked down.

"Oh..."

She smiled awkwardly.

"This birthmark?"

Elizabeth nodded silently.

"I've had it since I was born."

Her voice cracked.

"I know."

Lily frowned.

"I'm sorry?"

Elizabeth reached forward with trembling hands.

"May I...?"

The young woman hesitated before gently extending her arm.

Elizabeth carefully held her wrist as though touching something impossibly fragile.

The tiny heart-shaped mark was exactly where she remembered.

Exactly the same size.

Exactly the same shape.

Even the slight curve at the top.

Tears instantly filled Elizabeth's eyes.

"No..."

she whispered.

"It can't be..."

Nearby conversations began to stop.

Guests turned toward the unusual scene.

The orchestra slowly lowered their instruments.

Even the photographers sensed something important unfolding.

Lily gently pulled her hand back.

"Ma'am... have we met before?"

Elizabeth couldn't answer.

Instead, she asked a question so quietly that only Lily could hear.

"When is your birthday?"

Lily blinked.

"September eighteenth."

Elizabeth stopped breathing.

"What year?"

"Two thousand four."

The ballroom suddenly felt silent.

Elizabeth's knees weakened.

September 18.

The exact date.

The exact day.

The exact birthday of the infant who had disappeared from St. Matthew's Medical Center twenty-two years earlier.

The baby police never found.

The child Elizabeth had mourned every single day since.

Guests exchanged puzzled looks.

Someone whispered,

"What's happening?"

Another guest quietly replied,

"I have no idea."

Elizabeth looked directly into Lily's eyes.

"Who raised you?"

Lily shifted uncomfortably.

"My foster mother."

"And before that?"

"I... don't know."

"You don't know?"

Lily slowly shook her head.

"I was told I was abandoned."

A murmur swept across the ballroom.

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

She had heard those exact words before.

The police report.

"Infant believed abandoned. Biological parents unknown."

Unknown.

Except Elizabeth had spent twenty-two years insisting someone had taken her daughter.

No one believed her.

Not even the investigators.

"Lily..."

Elizabeth whispered.

"Do you own a silver locket?"

The question startled her.

Lily instinctively touched the necklace hidden beneath her uniform.

Very few people even knew she wore it.

"How..."

Her voice trembled.

"How did you know that?"

Gasps echoed around the room.

Elizabeth's face turned pale.

"Please."

She struggled to speak.

"Show it to me."

With shaking hands, Lily slowly removed a worn silver chain from beneath her shirt.

Hanging from it was an old heart-shaped locket.

Scratched.

Aged.

Ordinary.

Except for one tiny engraving on the back.

E.H.

Elizabeth Harrington.

The older woman covered her mouth.

"No..."

she whispered through tears.

"Oh, my God..."

The room fell completely silent.

Lily stared at her.

"My foster mother told me this necklace was with me when I was found."

Elizabeth reached into her evening purse.

Her hands shook so violently she nearly dropped its contents.

Finally...

She removed an identical silver locket.

The guests leaned closer.

The two lockets looked exactly alike.

Same design.

Same scratches around the edges.

Same tiny engraving.

Elizabeth slowly opened hers.

Inside rested a faded photograph.

A smiling young Elizabeth holding a newborn wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the opposite side was half of an engraved message.

"Forever..."

She looked at Lily.

"Open yours."

The young woman hesitated.

"I've... I've never been able to."

"It opens."

"No."

Lily shook her head.

"It was always stuck."

Elizabeth gently accepted the necklace.

Using trembling fingers, she pressed a nearly invisible latch hidden along its side.

Click.

For the first time in more than twenty years...

The locket opened.

Inside was the matching half of the photograph.

The same pink blanket.

The tiny hand of a newborn.

And beneath it...

The remaining engraved word.

"...Together."

The two halves completed one sentence.

Forever Together.

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Neither Elizabeth nor Lily noticed.

They were staring at the two matching lockets.

Two halves of one keepsake.

Separated for twenty-two years.

Elizabeth slowly looked into Lily's tear-filled eyes.

May you like

Then, with a voice barely above a whisper, she asked the question that would change both of their lives forever.

"Who... took you away from me?"
