After twelve hours of surgery, the operating room doors finally opened.
"The operation was successful," the lead surgeon said.
"But she lost a great deal of blood."
Relief swept through Ethan.
Until the doctor continued.
"There's something else."
Olivia had been eight weeks pregnant.
The trauma had nearly taken both mother and child.
Ethan felt his knees weaken.
They had been trying for years.
She had planned to surprise him on their anniversary.
Instead, she nearly died before she could tell him.
When Olivia finally regained consciousness, tears filled her eyes.
"I'm sorry..."
Ethan gently held her hand.
"No."
"You gave me everything."
"I'm the one who almost lost it."
Outside the room, Detective Collins approached quietly.
"We've found more evidence."
"It wasn't just the brakes."
"The medication your wife has been taking..."
"...someone switched the bottles."
