Chapter 6 - A Husband with Two Names.

The police moved Elena, Hope, and Claire to a protected medical wing before sunrise.
Every staff member was checked twice.
Food arrived in sealed containers.
No one entered alone.
Officer Reyes placed the photograph inside an evidence sleeve.
The image had been printed less than twenty minutes earlier.
Marcus had been close enough to see Elena’s window.
A hospital security sweep found no trace of him.
The investigation shifted when fingerprints from the underground room returned.
Several belonged to Marcus.
Several belonged to Dr. Adrian Kell.
The problem was that Marcus and Kell shared the same fingerprints.
Reyes brought the report to Elena.
She read it three times.
“That is impossible.”
“Not if Marcus Vale never existed.”
Claire searched public records from a police laptop.
Marcus’s childhood photographs appeared on school websites.
His college records looked complete.
His financial history stretched back fifteen years.
Everything seemed real until Claire found the first inconsistency.
The boy in Marcus’s high school yearbook had a scar above his left eyebrow.
Elena’s husband did not.
The original Marcus Vale had died in a boating accident at nineteen.
The death record had been sealed after a private settlement.
Someone had taken his identity.
Reyes compared the timeline.
Adrian Kell disappeared from medical practice for eleven months after the illegal trial ended.
Marcus Vale appeared in another state during that same period.
Elena remembered their first meeting.
Marcus had approached her at a hospital fundraiser.
He knew her father’s diagnosis.
He knew her family history.
He knew she wanted children.
She had thought he was attentive.
He had been selecting her.
Claire closed the laptop.
“He married you for your mutation.”
Elena felt the truth settle with terrible clarity.
Her romance had been recruitment.
Her marriage had been a laboratory.
Her pregnancy had been an asset.
Dr. Shah entered with Hope’s updated test results.
The baby remained stable, but a second marker had been found.
It was not medical.
It was a molecular watermark registered to a biotech company called Aeternum Genomics.
Marcus served as a silent shareholder through three shell corporations.
Aeternum had recently filed patents for a therapy targeting Vale-Corwin degeneration.
The patents lacked proof that the therapy worked in humans.
Hope was that proof.
Without her, the company could not justify its valuation.
With her, it could become one of the most valuable medical firms in the world.
Elena looked toward the dark window.
“Marcus will not stop.”
“No,” Reyes said.
“But he made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He kept records.”
Police had recovered encrypted drives from the underground room.
Federal agents were already working to open them.
At noon, the hospital alarm sounded.
A nurse announced a chemical leak on the lower floor.
Staff began evacuation procedures.
Reyes froze.
The alert had originated from a maintenance terminal using a stolen badge.
“Stay here,” he ordered.
The lights switched to emergency power.
The door lock disengaged automatically.
Smoke entered beneath the frame.
Claire wrapped Hope in a blanket.
Elena tried to stand, but pain folded her.
A firefighter appeared in the doorway.
His helmet visor concealed his face.
“Evacuation,” he said.
Reyes raised his weapon.
“Remove the helmet.”
The firefighter remained still.
“Now.”
He lifted the visor.
Marcus smiled.
A pistol appeared beneath his coat.
He fired at Reyes.
The officer fell against the wall.
Claire screamed.
Marcus seized the infant carrier.
Elena caught the strap.
For one second, husband and wife pulled against each other with Hope between them.
Marcus leaned close.
“You were never supposed to love her.”
Elena released the strap.
The sudden lack of resistance threw Marcus backward.
Claire struck him with the metal IV pole.
The carrier slid across the floor.
Elena caught it against the bed.
Marcus recovered and aimed at Claire.
Reyes fired from the floor.
The bullet struck Marcus’s shoulder.
Marcus stumbled into the smoke and disappeared through the stairwell.
Reyes pressed a hand to his bleeding side.
“Did he take anything?”
Claire looked toward the bed.
Hope was safe.

Then Elena saw the empty bassinet drawer.
Marcus had stolen the baby’s blood samples.
