Chapter 4 - The Room Beneath.

Paramedics wanted Elena upstairs immediately.
She refused to leave until someone opened the hatch.
Officer Reyes understood why.
A ringing phone beneath a secret floor in a kidnapping scene could not be ignored.
The firefighters pried the metal plate loose.
Cold air rose from the darkness.
A narrow ladder descended into a concrete chamber no larger than a walk-in closet.
Reyes went first.
His flashlight moved across shelves, sealed plastic boxes, medical coolers, and rows of labeled files.
There was no second prisoner.
There was something worse.
The files contained photographs of pregnant women.
Some images had been taken through hospital windows.
Others showed women entering fertility clinics.
Dates, blood types, due dates, and family histories were written beneath each photograph.
Elena’s file was thicker than all the others.
Reyes found the ringing phone inside a plastic container.
The screen displayed an incoming call from DR. ADRIAN KELL.
He answered without speaking.
A man’s voice filled the chamber.
“Marcus, the transfer has been approved, but the mother must not reach St. Catherine’s alive.”
Reyes recorded every word.
The caller ended the connection.
Elena heard the message through the basement speaker on Reyes’s radio.
The name struck her like another contraction.
Dr. Adrian Kell had supervised her fertility treatment three years earlier.
He had told Elena and Marcus that they would never conceive without intervention.
Two months later, Elena became pregnant naturally.
Marcus had called it a miracle.
Now the word felt poisoned.
The paramedics carried Elena into the rain.
Blue lights washed across the unfinished house.
Neighbors stood behind police tape.
People who had waved to Marcus every morning watched officers search his yard.
Claire climbed into the ambulance.
Officer Reyes followed.
“St. Catherine’s is closest,” the driver said.
“No,” Elena answered.
Everyone looked at her.
“Not St. Catherine’s.”
The driver checked the monitor.
“You are fully dilated.”
“Take me anywhere else.”
Reyes spoke into his radio.
“Route to County General.”
The ambulance moved.
Rain struck the roof like handfuls of gravel.
Elena’s pain became a continuous force.
Between contractions, she told Reyes about Dr. Kell.
She told him about the burned ultrasound.
She told him Marcus had insisted on St. Catherine’s for delivery even though County General was closer.
She told him Marcus had recently changed her life insurance policy.
Claire stared at her.
“How much?”
“Five million.”
“Why did you sign it?”
“I did not.”
The ambulance slowed at an intersection.
A black sport utility vehicle appeared behind them.
It followed through two turns.
Reyes watched it through the rear windows.
“Driver, do not stop.”
The SUV accelerated.
It struck the ambulance once from behind.
The impact threw Claire against the wall.
The fetal monitor slipped.
Elena’s baby’s heartbeat became a rapid electronic alarm.
The SUV hit them again.
Reyes drew his weapon but had no clear shot.
The ambulance driver called for assistance.
Then the road ahead filled with red taillights.
A construction truck blocked both lanes.
The ambulance braked.
The black SUV stopped behind them.
Its doors opened.
Two men in hospital scrubs stepped into the rain.
They were not carrying medical bags.
They were carrying suppressed pistols.
Reyes moved to the rear doors.
“Lights off.”
The ambulance interior darkened.
Claire held Elena’s hand.
One of the attackers pulled the rear handle.
Reyes waited.
The doors opened.
He fired once.
The first man fell backward.
The second attacker shot through the metal door.
A paramedic cried out.
The ambulance driver forced the vehicle onto the sidewalk and accelerated around the construction truck.
The second attacker grabbed the rear bumper.
Reyes kicked him away.
The man disappeared beneath the rain.
Elena screamed.
The baby was coming.
The paramedic checked her and looked at Claire.
“We are not reaching the hospital.”
Officer Reyes locked the damaged doors.
“Then deliver here.”
The ambulance raced through the city while Elena pushed.
Claire supported her shoulders.
The surviving paramedic guided the child into the world.
For one unbearable second, there was no sound.
Then a baby girl cried.
Elena sobbed.
The paramedic wrapped the infant and placed her against Elena’s chest.
Reyes looked through the cracked rear window.

The black SUV had returned.
And beside its driver sat Dr. Adrian Kell.
