The following weekend, our parents invited everyone over.
No birthday decorations.
No celebration.
Just silence.
Sarah cried throughout the conversation.
"I never wanted to hurt him."
Emily answered calmly.
"You may not have wanted to hurt him, but you ignored him when he asked for help."
No one defended Sarah.
Even Matthew quietly walked over and sat beside Noah.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"It wasn't your fault," Noah replied.
Watching those two boys comfort each other while the adults struggled with guilt was heartbreaking.
Our parents accepted what they could no longer deny.
Sarah had crossed a line that couldn't simply be forgiven because she was family.
From that day forward, she was no longer allowed to be alone with any of the children.
