Chapter 8: The Betrayal I Never Expected

Chapter 8: The Betrayal I Never Expected

The drive back to my father’s house felt longer than usual.

Every street.

Every building.

Every passing light.

Everything looked different.

Because once someone places a doubt in your mind, you can never see the world the same way again.

Victoria wanted me to question my father.

That was obvious.

But the terrifying part was that she didn’t need to convince me.

She only needed to plant the seed.

And now it was growing.

The documents in my hands felt heavier than paper.

A company created in my name.

A signature that looked like mine.

A transaction I never approved.

And one impossible accusation.

Your father forged your identity.

I wanted to believe Victoria was lying.

I needed to.

Because after Nathan betrayed me, my father was the one person I believed was different.

The one person who never abandoned me.

The one person who always protected me.

But then I remembered something.

My father’s reaction when I mentioned Project Blackthorn.

The hesitation.

The fear.

The silence.

He had known more than he admitted.

And that scared me.

When I arrived home, the lights in my father’s office were still on.

He was waiting.

He always knew when something was wrong.

“You met her.”

It wasn’t a question.

I walked inside.

“Yes.”

My father stood immediately.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did she threaten you?”

I placed the documents on his desk.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

But enough.

Enough for me to know.

He recognized them.

“What are these?”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Answer the question.”

He looked at the papers.

Then at me.

“Where did you get them?”

“Victoria.”

The room became silent.

My father closed his eyes for a moment.

That reaction told me everything.

“You knew.”

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.”

His silence hurt more than any confession.

“You knew about this.”

Finally, he spoke.

“Yes.”

I stepped back.

The word felt like a betrayal.

“How long?”

“Five years.”

Five years.

The same time period Victoria mentioned.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“Five years.”

“You created a company in my name five years ago.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I shook my head.

“That answer doesn’t work anymore.”

My father looked hurt.

“I had reasons.”

“Then tell me.”

He looked away.

And that was the moment I realized something.

My father wasn’t hiding because he was ashamed.

He was hiding because he was afraid.

“Dad.”

My voice softened slightly.

“What happened?”

He walked toward the window.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“When you were twenty-six, someone tried to take control of Vale International.”

I frowned.

“I remember.”

“A hostile takeover.”

“Yes.”

“But you never knew who was behind it.”

I looked at him.

“Victoria.”

He nodded.

“She failed.”

“But she didn’t stop.”

My father turned around.

“She realized the only way to reach me was through you.”

My heart tightened.

“So Nathan…”

“Yes.”

My father’s voice became heavy.

“Nathan was selected years before you met him.”

I felt sick.

Every memory.

Every moment.

Everything I thought was real.

A carefully designed plan.

“He approached me because of my family.”

My father nodded.

“I believe so.”

I looked down.

“Then why create the company?”

He hesitated.

“To protect you.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“Because I knew eventually someone would try to use your name against you.”

He opened another file.

Inside was a legal document.

“Five years ago, I created a private holding company under your name.”

“Not to control your life.”

“To protect your inheritance.”

I looked at the papers.

“So the signature…”

“Is yours.”

I froze.

“What?”

My father looked at me.

“You signed it.”

“I don’t remember.”

“Because you were unconscious.”

The room went cold.

“What?”

My father looked devastated.

“You were in an accident.”

“Minor surgery.”

“You were heavily medicated.”

“I needed your authorization to protect your assets.”

I stared at him.

“You signed legal documents while you knew I couldn’t understand them?”

“I thought I was saving you.”

“But you never told me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

His answer was quiet.

“Because after that day, I realized something.”

“What?”

“That everyone around you was becoming dangerous.”

He looked at me.

“And I was terrified that if you knew the truth, you would become a target.”

I turned away.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to scream.

But another emotion was stronger.

Pain.

Because my father had not betrayed me the way Nathan did.

He had hidden things out of fear.

But secrets were still secrets.

And secrets still hurt.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

“Evelyn.”

Victoria.

My father immediately recognized her voice.

“What do you want?”

Victoria ignored him.

“Did he tell you the truth?”

I didn’t answer.

She laughed softly.

“I knew he wouldn’t.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means your father is still protecting his biggest secret.”

I looked at my father.

“What secret?”

Silence.

Then Victoria said:

“The reason your mother disappeared.”

My heart stopped.

My father’s face changed instantly.

And that was the moment I knew.

This was bigger than Nathan.

Bigger than Ashford Global.

Bigger than money.

Because Victoria had just opened a door to a past my father had spent my entire life hiding.

A past involving my mother.

May you like

And a truth that could destroy everything I believed about my own family.

To be continued...
