Chapter 12: The Man Who Started Everything

Chapter 12: The Man Who Started Everything

The stranger stood beneath the dim harbor lights, holding the old photograph in his hand.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not him.

Not even my father on the phone.

Then my father’s voice came through the speaker.

“Evelyn.”

His tone had changed.

Not worried.

Not afraid.

Terrified.

“Get away from him.”

The stranger smiled.

“That’s interesting.”

He looked directly at me.

“Even after twenty years, Alexander still thinks he can control every situation.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?”

The man took a slow step forward.

“My name is Richard Cross.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction from my father told me everything.

A long silence.

Then my father whispered:

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“Yes, Alexander.”

“You finally ran out of places to hide.”

I looked between them.

“You know him.”

My father didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Richard looked at me.

“Your father has spent your entire life protecting you from the truth.”

“But he never told you what he was protecting you from.”

I stayed silent.

Because I had learned something important.

Everyone in my life had a story.

And everyone believed they were the hero.

Richard continued.

“Twenty years ago, your father and I built something together.”

My eyes narrowed.

“Built what?”

“An organization.”

“An empire.”

He looked toward the harbor.

“Not a company.”

“Something much bigger.”

My father’s voice suddenly interrupted.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Richard laughed.

“Still trying to control the narrative.”

I looked at the phone.

“Dad.”

A pause.

“Tell me.”

Nothing.

“Tell me the truth.”

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then my father finally spoke.

“Richard was my partner.”

The words hit me.

“Partner?”

“Yes.”

“In the early days of Vale International.”

I looked at Richard.

“What happened?”

My father’s voice became heavy.

“Richard believed power should belong only to those strong enough to take it.”

“He wanted control.”

“I wanted protection.”

Richard smiled.

“And that is where we disagreed.”

The story unfolded slowly.

Years ago, before Vale International became a global corporation, my father and Richard created a private network.

They collected information.

They protected companies.

They prevented threats.

At first, they had the same goal.

Keep powerful people from abusing their influence.

But power changed Richard.

He stopped wanting to protect people.

He wanted to control them.

“He started using the information we collected,” my father said.

“To blackmail.”

“To manipulate.”

“To eliminate anyone who stood in his way.”

Richard didn’t deny it.

“Because it worked.”

His voice was calm.

“People pretend morality matters until they lose everything.”

I stared at him.

“You destroyed my family.”

He looked at me.

“No.”

His answer was immediate.

“Your father destroyed your family by choosing weakness.”

My anger rose.

“You mean choosing not to become a monster?”

Richard smiled.

“You sound just like your mother.”

That sentence stopped me.

My mother.

I looked at him.

“What did you do to her?”

Richard’s expression changed slightly.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

“She discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That your father was not as innocent as he wanted you to believe.”

My heart tightened.

Again.

Another secret.

Another half-truth.

I looked at my father.

“Is that true?”

Silence.

The silence hurt.

Because I knew there was something else.

Richard stepped closer.

“Your father didn’t create Project Blackthorn to stop people like me.”

“He created it because he became afraid of what he had helped build.”

I stared at my father’s face.

“Dad?”

His voice was quiet.

“I made mistakes.”

The words broke something inside me.

Not because he admitted it.

Because he sounded tired.

Like a man who had been carrying the weight for too long.

Richard continued.

“And your mother wanted to expose everything.”

“She wanted the world to know what your father had done.”

My mother looked at him.

“That’s not the whole truth.”

Everyone turned.

For the first time, my mother stepped forward.

Her voice was stronger.

“Richard is leaving out the part where he threatened our daughter.”

The smile disappeared from Richard’s face.

I froze.

“What?”

My mother looked at me.

“When I discovered what he was doing, I tried to leave.”

“He threatened to take you away from me.”

“He said he would destroy your father.”

“Destroy me.”

“And use you as a weapon against both of us.”

My blood ran cold.

Richard’s calm expression finally cracked.

“You don’t understand.”

“No,” my mother said.

“I understand perfectly.”

She looked at me.

“He was never trying to expose your father.”

“He wanted his empire.”

Richard’s eyes became cold.

“And I finally realized something.”

He looked directly at me.

“Your father’s greatest weakness was always you.”

A chill moved through me.

“What do you mean?”

Richard smiled.

“I didn’t need to defeat Alexander Vale.”

“I only needed to make him choose.”

“His empire…”

“Or his daughter.”

My father’s voice became urgent.

“Evelyn, leave now.”

But it was too late.

Because behind Richard, several vehicles appeared.

Black SUVs.

Multiple men stepped out.

My heart sank.

Richard looked at me.

“Your father spent twenty years preparing for me.”

He smiled.

“But he never prepared you.”

The men surrounded us.

My phone suddenly went silent.

The call had been disconnected.

Richard looked at me one last time.

“Welcome to the real war, Evelyn.”

And as the darkness closed around us...

I realized something terrifying.

Nathan tried to destroy my life.

Victoria tried to steal my family’s empire.

But Richard Cross?

May you like

He had been trying to control my entire life since before I was old enough to understand what control meant.

To be continued...
