I could barely breathe as I lay on the cold river rocks, staring up at the faces of the people who were supposed to protect me.
My brother Tyler stood above me, frozen. My mother looked more annoyed than afraid. She wasn’t asking if I was okay. She wasn’t calling my name.
She was worried about the damage this would cause.
“Get him inside before the neighbors see,” she whispered.
That was when I realized something terrifying.
They weren’t shocked by what happened.
They were afraid of what I might say.
The ambulance arrived minutes later. The paramedics rushed toward me, but the detective who followed them didn’t look at Tyler or my mother.
He walked straight toward me.
“Marcus,” he said quietly, “I need you to answer one question.”
I tried to move, but my body wouldn’t respond.
“Where’s the person who was with your grandmother the night before she changed her will?”
I stared at him, confused.
“What are you talking about?”
The detective looked toward my family.
“They told us your grandmother died naturally. But new evidence suggests someone may have pressured her before she signed those documents.”
My heart started racing.
My grandmother’s estate wasn’t just money.
It was the reason Tyler attacked me.
