Chapter 14 - The Night the Names Fell.

I did not sleep before Gabriel's press conference.

Neither did Renata.

Around four in the morning, she asked the nurse to wheel her to the window at the end of the corridor.

New York was still dark below us.

We sat without talking.

For once, there was no useful plan to discuss.

There was only the possibility that the next day would place every ugly thing I had done beside every ugly thing Gabriel had invented.

Renata finally typed one sentence on her tablet.

TELL THE PART THAT'S YOURS FIRST.

That became the entire strategy.

Aster Vale headquarters occupied the top floors of a glass tower on Madison Avenue.

Gabriel scheduled his press conference for ten in the morning.

By nine, satellite trucks filled the curb.

By nine thirty, every major network had a camera inside.

Gabriel wanted witnesses.

So did we.

The difference was that he believed they belonged to him.

Naomi spent the night building warrants around the real Harbor Book, Emmett's statement, Miriam's testimony, financial records, the age of the forged notebook, and Victor's proffer.

Victor's testimony alone was not enough.

He had too much guilt of his own.

But guilt made him useful in a different way.

He knew where Gabriel kept the original audio archive.

He knew which Aster Vale lawyer controlled the backup.

He knew the naming system used for recordings that were never meant to exist.

Federal agents recovered the files at 8:17 a.m.

Gabriel did not know.

At 8:32, Naomi called me.

"We have Elena's recording."

I stopped breathing.

"Is it real?"

"Preliminary metadata matches the date."

"Have you listened?"

A pause.

"Yes."

"What does she say?"

Naomi's voice softened.

"Daniel, you should hear it yourself."

I was sitting beside Renata when the secure audio arrived.

She reached for my hand.

I did not realize how much I needed that until she did it.

The recording began with rain hammering metal.

A car door opened.

Someone shouted in the distance.

Then Gabriel's younger voice.

"Where is the book?"

Elena coughed.

Her reply was weak but clear.

"Somewhere you'll never understand."

Gabriel said, "Daniel will come for you."

Elena laughed once.

It sounded painful.

"No."

"He will."

"You don't know him."

"My father knows him."

"Your father knows the man Daniel stopped being."

There was a long pause.

Then Gabriel said, "The Ghost always comes back."

Elena answered with the last words I would ever hear her speak.

"Then you never understood why I loved him."

The recording continued for another twenty seconds, but Elena did not speak again.

I sat beside Renata and cried for the first time since the funeral.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

I simply lowered my head while my daughter held my hand.

For eleven years, I had imagined Elena's final moments as lonely confusion on a wet highway.

They had been worse than that.

And somehow better.

She had known exactly who I could still choose to be.

At 9:45, I stood.

Renata typed on her tablet.

YOU'RE GOING.

"Yes."

WHY?

"Because Gabriel wants an ending."

She waited.

"I'm going to give him one he didn't write."

At 9:58, Gabriel Vale stepped behind a podium in front of forty cameras.

The Aster Vale logo appeared on the wall behind him.

He wore a dark blue suit and a pale tie.

No black tuxedo.

No mysterious symbolism.

Today he wanted to look respectable.

I watched from a monitor in a conference room one floor below with Naomi and two agents.

Marco remained at the hospital with Renata because I asked him to.

He complained for six straight minutes.

Then he agreed.

Gabriel began calmly.

"Over the past several days, several respected families and institutions have been targeted by a coordinated campaign of financial leaks, manipulated media, and intimidation."

He paused for the cameras.

"Evidence now suggests that campaign is connected to a man known historically as The Ghost."

My old photograph appeared on the screen behind him.

Reporters murmured.

Gabriel continued.

"That man is Daniel Salgado."

He showed the forged Harbor Book.

He showed photographs of me with Marco.

He showed a still image of me entering the U.S. Attorney's Office.

He showed Emmett's abandoned car.

He played an edited piece of my call with Marco.

My voice said, "I want every secret."

Then a cut.

"Money. Companies. Judges. Police officers."

Then another cut.

"Anything they paid to hide."

Out of context, it sounded like extortion.

Gabriel looked directly into the central camera.

"This is not a father's search for justice."

"This is the return of an old criminal enterprise."

Naomi glanced at me.

"Still want to go upstairs?"

"More than before."

"Remember the plan."

"I remember."

At 10:11, I entered the press conference through the side doors.

The room exploded with noise.

Cameras swung toward me.

Reporters stood.

Gabriel stopped speaking.

For one second, satisfaction flashed across his face.

This was the image he wanted.

The Ghost had arrived.

I walked toward the podium without hurrying.

Security moved uncertainly.

Gabriel raised a hand.

"Let him through."

I stopped several feet away.

He smiled.

"Daniel."

"Gabriel."

"I was wondering whether grief would finally make you predictable."

"It did."

His smile widened.

"Good."

"It made me call a lawyer."

Several reporters laughed nervously.

Gabriel's smile thinned.

"You think jokes change what you are?"

"No."

I looked at the cameras.

"Truth does not change what I was either."

The room quieted.

"I ran an illegal network many years ago."

Gabriel's eyes sharpened.

He had not expected an admission.

"I used money, secrecy, and influence to control people."

"I hurt people."

"I justified it because I believed the people around me had chosen the same world."

I looked back at Gabriel.

"Then my daughter was born, and I left."

Gabriel interrupted.

"According to your own ledgers, you never left."

"Those aren't my ledgers."

He lifted the forged Harbor Book.

"Your codes."

"Modern paper."

His expression changed.

"Modern ink."

I continued.

"A notebook manufactured years after some of the entries supposedly written inside it."

Reporters began talking at once.

Gabriel looked toward one of his attorneys.

The attorney looked away.

"That proves nothing," Gabriel said.

"You're right."

I nodded.

"So let's use the real one."

The side doors opened.

Naomi Chen entered carrying a sealed evidence pouch.

Beside her walked Miriam Hale.

Behind them came Emmett Varela with his attorney.

The room erupted.

Gabriel's face went completely still.

That was the first moment I knew he understood he had lost control of the room.

Naomi approached the podium.

"Mr. Vale, federal agents are executing warrants at Aster Vale offices on multiple floors."

Gabriel stared at her.

"This is a media stunt."

"No."

Naomi's voice was flat.

"Your press conference is the media stunt."

Emmett stepped forward.

"I told them everything."

Gabriel turned on him.

"You have no idea what you've done."

"For once, I do."

Then another figure entered the room.

Victor.

He wore a plain gray coat.

No one recognized him at first.

Gabriel did.

His face changed before the cameras understood why.

"Dad."

The word moved through the microphones.

Victor stopped ten feet away.

"Hello, Gabriel."

Gabriel looked almost young for one second.

Not frightened.

Abandoned.

Then the mask returned.

"You coward."

Victor nodded.

"Yes."

The answer took the fight out of the insult.

"I was."

Gabriel's jaw tightened.

"You built all of this."

"I built enough of it to know what it became."

"And now you hand it to prosecutors because Daniel came back?"

Victor shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the cameras.

"Because Renata survived."

The room fell silent.

Gabriel laughed once.

"This is pathetic."

He turned to me.

"You think this makes you clean?"

"No."

"You think your daughter will forget what you were?"

"No."

"You think Elena forgave you?"

My body went still.

There it was.

The final lever.

Gabriel saw it and moved closer.

"I heard her last words."

"So did I."

His confidence flickered.

"You recovered the recording."

"Yes."

For the first time, Gabriel looked toward the exits.

Federal agents stood at both doors.

He understood.

Then he did exactly what Victor had predicted.

He tried to create the image anyway.

Gabriel stepped close enough that only inches separated us.

"Do it."

I said nothing.

"Come on, Ghost."

Cameras zoomed in.

"Show them."

His voice dropped.

"Show Renata who her father really is."

Nineteen years earlier, Victor's son would have received the reaction he wanted.

Eleven years earlier, the man who learned Elena had been taken from him might have given it too.

But I heard Elena in the rain.

Then you never understood why I loved him.

I stepped back.

Gabriel smiled desperately.

"Afraid?"

"No."

I looked at Naomi.

"Finished."

Two agents moved forward.

Gabriel's expression finally broke.

"You don't get to walk away from me."

I looked at him.

"That's the difference between you and your father."

"He spent nineteen years waiting for The Ghost to return."

"You spent nineteen years trying to force him back."

I glanced at the cameras.

"Neither of you understood that he wasn't trapped underground."

I touched my chest once.

"He was a choice."

Naomi placed Gabriel under arrest on charges connected to obstruction, conspiracy, witness interference, and financial crimes under investigation.

Victor was taken into custody as well.

He did not resist.

As agents led Gabriel toward the door, he looked back at me.

"This isn't over."

I almost smiled.

"For the first time, that isn't your decision."

Outside Aster Vale, reporters filled the sidewalk.

Inside the hospital, Renata watched the entire thing from bed.

Marco later told me she did not cheer when Gabriel was taken away.

She simply closed her eyes.

May you like

Then she typed one sentence on her tablet.

NOW WE CAN START.
