Chapter 10 - The Locket.

There are truths that feel cleaner once spoken and truths that leave a room messier than before.

My confession to Renata belonged to the second kind.

Nothing about it repaired trust instantly.

She did not reach for my hand.

She did not tell me she understood.

She listened.

That was more than I had earned.

I had spent years confusing protection with control because both could be described with the same sentence.

I only want you safe.

Elena had challenged that sentence whenever I used it as permission to decide for everyone else.

Now Renata was doing the same.

Renata did not forgive me when I returned to the hospital.

She did something more difficult.

She asked me to sit down.

The swelling around her eyes had begun to ease, but the brace still made speaking almost impossible.

The nurse placed a tablet on her lap so Renata could type.

She wrote one sentence and turned the screen toward me.

I WANT EVERYTHING.

"Everything about what?"

She typed again.

YOU.

MOM.

THE GHOST.

WHY SHE WAS AFRAID.

I looked toward the window.

"That could take a while."

Renata typed two words.

I'M HERE.

So I told her.

I told her how I first met Elena at a shipping office in Newark when she caught an invoice error that had saved me more money than the manager earned in a year.

I told her Elena had no idea who I really was for the first six months.

I told her how furious she had been when she found out.

I told her that she did not fall in love with The Ghost.

She fell in love with the man who sometimes came home after midnight and looked tired of pretending power was the same thing as purpose.

I told Renata about the first time Elena asked me to leave.

Not leave her.

Leave the life.

I refused.

Three months later, Elena packed one suitcase and moved out.

I lasted nine days.

Renata's eyes softened slightly.

"Your mother was much better at negotiation than I was."

Renata typed.

I KNOW.

I laughed quietly.

Then I told her about Victor.

He had been brilliant, patient, and almost invisible.

He never demanded the center of a room.

He preferred standing beside the person everyone else thought was in charge.

Victor handled records, introductions, and the quiet agreements nobody wanted written down.

He understood my network because he helped design parts of it.

Then he began using it for himself.

Small things at first.

A payment redirected.

A dock assignment changed.

A favor sold twice.

By the time I discovered it, Victor had built a private network inside mine.

"I was going to destroy him," I said.

Renata stared at me.

"Your mother stopped me."

She typed slowly.

WHY?

"Because she was pregnant with you."

Renata stopped moving.

"She said if I wanted to raise a child, I couldn't teach myself that every betrayal deserved a permanent punishment."

I looked down at my hands.

"She was right."

Renata's next question appeared.

DID VICTOR KNOW ABOUT ME?

"He knew Elena was pregnant."

DID HE HATE ME BEFORE I WAS BORN?

The question cut through every other fear I had.

"No."

I moved closer.

"Listen to me."

Her eyes met mine.

"What happened to you is not because you existed."

"It's because powerful people made choices."

"Those choices belong to them."

"Not you."

Renata looked down.

Her fingers hovered over the tablet.

Then she typed.

I FOUND MOM BECAUSE I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT YOU.

I waited.

SHE KEPT NOTES ABOUT THE TRUCK.

THE KEY.

GABRIEL.

I THOUGHT IF I FIGURED IT OUT FIRST, I COULD ASK YOU WITHOUT YOU LYING.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

"That worked out badly for both of us."

A tiny smile appeared at the corner of her mouth and immediately hurt.

She winced.

"Don't smile."

Her eyes accused me of saying something ridiculous.

The door opened.

Naomi Chen entered with Marco behind her.

Naomi held a sealed evidence pouch containing Elena's locket.

"We found something in the audio file you should both hear."

Renata straightened slightly.

Naomi placed a small speaker on the table.

"Our audio lab isolated a second recording underneath Elena's message."

"Underneath?"

"The file was overwritten, but not completely."

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Elena's voice.

Faint.

Distant.

"You cannot keep using Daniel's name."

A man's voice answered.

Gabriel.

"It isn't his name."

"You know exactly what I mean."

"The Ghost belongs to whoever understands what people believe about him."

Elena said something lost beneath static.

Gabriel replied.

"My father built the truth."

"Daniel built the fear."

"I'm only keeping them useful."

Renata's eyes moved toward me.

The recording continued.

Elena said, "One day Daniel will find out."

Gabriel laughed once.

"That's the point."

"He'll come after you."

"Exactly."

A long pause.

Then Gabriel said the words that explained nineteen years of planning.

"The safest place to bury our crimes is inside his reputation."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Naomi finally broke the silence.

"That's Gabriel's voice if we can authenticate it."

"Can you?"

"We need a clean comparison sample."

Marco leaned against the wall.

"He gives speeches."

"Public speeches aren't enough for courtroom certainty."

"Then get him talking privately."

Naomi looked at me.

"No."

I had not said anything.

"You were about to suggest meeting him."

"I was thinking it."

"Don't."

Marco almost smiled.

"She's getting to know you."

Naomi ignored him.

"We have enough to pursue warrants through independent channels."

"How long?"

"Longer than you want."

"Victor and Gabriel are erasing records now."

"And if you move without us, you validate Lazarus."

Renata tapped the tablet hard enough to make everyone look at her.

She typed.

MAKE HIM CALL ME.

I frowned.

"Absolutely not."

She typed again.

HE WANTS THE KEY.

"He already knows we opened it."

HE WANTS TO KNOW WHAT I FOUND.

Naomi considered it.

I saw the thought forming and hated it immediately.

"No."

Naomi looked at me.

"She may be right."

"She's nineteen and in a hospital bed."

Renata typed.

I'M ALSO THE ONLY PERSON HE THINKS HE CAN SCARE.

"You are not calling him."

Her eyes hardened.

I recognized Elena again.

Naomi raised a hand.

"Nobody is doing anything without safeguards."

"Good."

"But a controlled call could establish voice identity and potentially admissions."

"No."

Renata typed one final sentence.

YOU SAID THE CHOICES BELONG TO ME TOO.

I stared at the screen.

She had used my own truth against me.

Elena would have been proud.

I hated that thought.

The controlled call happened at 4:30 p.m.

Federal technicians recorded from a secured system.

Renata used text-to-speech because she still could not speak clearly.

A message was sent to an email address connected to Aster Vale.

I HAVE THE REST OF ELENA'S FILE.

CALL ME.

The phone rang eleven minutes later.

Gabriel's voice came through the speaker.

"Renata."

The fact that he did not ask who it was made every person in the room focus.

Renata typed.

The synthetic voice said, "You wanted the key."

Gabriel chuckled softly.

"I wanted what your mother hid."

Renata typed.

"You knew my mother?"

A pause.

"Better than your father did at the end."

My hand tightened around the chair.

Naomi shook her head slightly.

Stay still.

Renata continued.

"Did you hurt her?"

Gabriel's breathing changed.

"No."

"Did Victor?"

"My father made many mistakes."

"Was my mother one of them?"

Silence.

Then Gabriel said, "Your mother chose the wrong secret to protect."

Naomi wrote something quickly.

Renata typed.

"And me?"

Gabriel's voice softened in a way that made him sound worse.

"You were supposed to hand over a key."

"Maurice changed the evening."

My vision narrowed.

There it was.

Knowledge of the plan.

Knowledge of Maurice's actions.

Renata typed.

"You told them to confront me."

Gabriel answered too quickly.

"I told them to recover property that never belonged to you."

Naomi's eyes lifted.

Admission.

Renata's fingers trembled.

She typed again.

"Where is Emmett?"

Gabriel went quiet.

"Safe enough."

"Let him go."

"Your father once taught my father that leverage only works if the other person believes you will keep it."

I leaned toward the microphone despite Naomi's warning.

"Gabriel."

Silence.

Then a soft laugh.

"There you are."

I hated how pleased he sounded.

"You wanted me involved."

"For nineteen years."

"Why?"

"Because men like you don't retire."

"I did."

"You hid."

"There's a difference."

"Not to the people who remember you."

Gabriel's voice became colder.

"Come to the Varela Foundation gala tomorrow night."

Naomi immediately shook her head.

Gabriel continued.

"Come alone, and I'll give you Emmett."

"And if I don't?"

"Then Project Lazarus becomes tomorrow's truth."

The call ended.

Naomi removed her headset.

"You are not going alone."

I looked at Renata.

She had already typed something.

GO.

I shook my head.

May you like

Then she added two words.

OUR WAY.
